It's funny. We just met with a couple and threw out a comment about us starting to offer photography. They asked a few questions, seemed somewhat interested but wary b/c they are hiring us based on 2 referrals from relatives who used us for videography. (I'm afraid they feel the video will suffer if I have to divide my attention, which I'm sure in some ways it may, but in other ways, I feel it will improve...) Anyway, I told them that we hope to still keep our feet firmly planted in the videography arena b/c we love it so much (at the time I had to fib a little b/c I was feeling a little burned out, but nonetheless...) and I mentioned that so many videographers tend to abandon video after starting to shoot photography and we didn't want that to happen to us. (blah blah blah). They asked why would a videographer would want to switch. I did all I could to keep from laughing. I ended up saying, "Frankly, it's easier. You don't have to worry about what it sounds like. You don't have to worry about covering up gapping holes in the middle of a ceremony when someone blocks your camera. You can move without it being noticeable. You can come into something half way through and it doesn't matter. People are less intimidated by a still camera. Everyone hires a photographer, while only a percentage of brides hire a videographer. And you can turn around the final product so much quicker." (I probably shouldn't have done that, but I couldn't help it. Call it verbal vomit. It just started coming and I couldn't stop it!) They just nodded. Then the bride said, "I see your point." That's when I realized what I had done - the verbal vomit - and I quickly switched gears and said, "That's why it's a good thing we love video. It's a lot of work, and you have to commit to it, which we did a long time ago. And besides, we just feel it's so much more rewarding in the end." The bride said, "I think the video is more important than the pictures..." And bango, we were back on track. (Of course, they will probably end up going out and paying a photographer more than us anyway... but at least I restored her confidence in us. At least, I hope so considering they booked a decent package.) Now if only they would hire us for photography, too.
