The Hybrids are taking over.... Can't Post

I expect to see many more hybrids (vidoegrapher/photographers) in the year to come. Me included. What perfect timing for this forum to go up- I just got my 1D mkII today!

Wow! Glen, that's a VERY nice camera. I took the Nikon route and is heavily invested on Nikon lenses and accessories now. I think Canon is more popular for wedding photographers.
I'm hoping I can afford the Nikon D2X sometime in the future. But I need to sell my services as a wedding photographer as well.

I'm going to post later some of the photographs I did from a recent wedding. We were hired to do the wedding video but we took some photos on the side to build up our portfolio.

Yeah I originally purchased the 20D and about 2k worth of glass. For various reason I decided to return them- keep my 85 1.8 for now...and upgrade to the 1D. It's a phenominal camera- I've been testing it out all night. It's almost impossible to shoot a single shot in burst mode! By the time I hit the shutter and release I shoot 2 shots inadvertantly. It's the fastest DSLR in the world (right now)- 8.5 fps for up to 40 frames. It's going to be great for wedding/event shooting with it's great low light focusing performance and incredible AI- autotracking Focus (45 focus points on the focus screen!), and industry leading ISO performance.

Alas, it IS quite an investment- regardless of them coming down in price...4k isn't chump change. I'm quite serious about transitioning (at least partially) to Photography by the 2006 season. I look forward to chatting with you all about the idiosyncracies of Photography vs Videography, etc.

the 1D Mk2 is an awesome camera. it's hard to take a bad picture with it. which lenses did you get rid of? my assistant has a 20D and all he uses is the 85 1.8. The IS lenses are worth the $$.

download this link for tips on setting the custom functions to optimize for weddings (45 focus points is hard to manage during a wedding):

I've been snapping photos at all of my recent video gigs- practicing with the camera and building a portfolio. I'll be doing my first real video/photo combo wedding next month. I'll post pics and a recap then.

It's not a simple point and shoot cam. I got rid of a 50 1.8 and a 70-200 2.8L IS which I LOVED. I'm going to repurchase that lense when I can afford it. But the 24-70 2.8L is first on my list.

http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/EOS_Digital.pdf Yes that is an excellent link- I already printed that out last week. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm glad you said it. I was thinking it, but didn't want to bring it up. Seems like it would make for some tension, at the very least.

I have a clause in my contract that I will be the sole professional videographer at the event. If another industry professional like a photographer whipped out a videocam- I'd swiftly put an end to it.

I assume that most photographers are fairly confident in their work and wouldn't feel threatened by a videographer with a camera. So far it hasn't been any problem at all. Some even give me tips! Wink

Before I pull the camera out, I tell them I might be shooting some stills for the DVD cover and photo montage. I make it clear that I don't sell or offer the photos to the bride and groom. Don't know how many believe me after I whip out the 1DMk2 with the huge 70-200 iS lens.

Only 1 photographer had a problem (out of 15 or so weddings). She was really low class. I shot anyways (thankfully). Her photos came out horribly, the bride's sister remembered I was taking pictures and contacted me to see what I had. The videographer saved the day! (I think that was the only time the bride spent more on video than photography too).
