"The Truth About Digital Cameras" Can't Post

(for all you blog lovers Tongue found link on SmugMug forum http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=47871 )

Funny blog post by David Pogue, showing how it's not humanly possible to tell the difference between a 5mp and a 13mp image, blown up to a 16x24 print.

It was something I researched, as I was about to buy a 5mp Olympus pro body, as they were selling them off cheap (discontinued), before I went bust and had to sell off all my digital gear. Everyone on the forums were saying,"oh, don't invest in a 5mp camera, because you can only make small prints with it." I guess those are the same people that constantly buy the latest XXD Canon DSLR, which Canon seems to bank on, by coming out with new models every 6 months. Laugh

The photographer at Saturday's wedding was shooting with a Canon 10D, which is a 6.5 MP camera., and I am sure that his photos will look great. The lens and sensor size are more important than pixel count. That is the best argument for going with a DSLR rather than a point and shoot.

I believe that true photo printing (not inkjet type) only print at 150dpi because the dots are true color, rather than ink-jets that have to put lots of little dots together in a combination to trick your eye into seeing a combination of the colors.

Given that, a 6.2mp camera will print a 20x13.65 inch image without any resizing...which is pretty good. On an inkjet you won't get that (basically cut it in half and do an 8x10 after stretching a little), but send it to a pro print shop.

Print | Megapixels | Resolution

4 X 6" | 0.6 | 930 x 620
5 X 7" | 0.7 | 1008 x 720
8 X 10" | 1.3 | 1280 x 1024
16 X 20" | 1.8 | 1500 x 1200
20 X 30" | 2.2 | 1800 x 1200

Found this on the Kodak Easyshare site. Surprisingly low resolution required for prints using their process!
