The pitfall of selling a photo service Can't Post

Have a look at Kirk Darling's post near the end of the page. I think he hit the nail on the head about why some photogs are having trouble with customers whom they let have too much say.

OK in brief he said you need excellent customer relations whether you sell a service or a product. The big difference is that if you sell a service, it often means the customer has some say in what is provided or how. That opens the door to unsatisifed customer expectations. You become the customer's proxy, who could be replaced by any other supplier who can follow orders. OTOH Provide a product and you retain control. You set out the definition of what the customer is buying and it becomes"your" work - no-one else can substitute their product because you are bringing your own talent etc to the deal.

That's what my plans are for, after I can get a day job to pay the bills and get out of my current business of providing a "service", and start selling a "product" instead...the way I want it. That way, customers can take it or leave it...makes no difference to me whether it's the style they want. Right now, I pretty much get paid to make videos, and do any dance the client wants for peanuts.Laugh

This is extremely interesting. I've never thought of it like that before.

Just another reason to get out of programming computers. There's no way to make that a 'product' unless you're doing the commercial software package thing a-la MS, Symantec, etc. It's all custom work and it drives me crazy because clients have full control. With photography you develop a certian style and present that. They can take the style or leave it, as Rusty said. Very interesting. Thanks for posting that.
