Uncle Charlie tells me the difference between his cam and the pro's cam Can't Post

I was having a consultation with a bride and her
family to discuss their wedding day.

Just so happened that there was an Uncle Charlie there,
eager to talk about his camera and pictures.

So ... he tells me that the BIG difference between
his camera and the cameras the pros use is that "the
pro's cam works a lot better in automatic mode". Laugh

Now, I've heard on some other forums that one hazard of
the job out on location - when you're shooting stills - is
that there's always an Uncle Charlie in the crowd
who's eager to engage you in conversation. I'm
thinking now that maybe this might be true.

Of course, with video, this really almost never happens.

So have you found this to be true, that there's a camera
buff around every corner looking to talk equipment?
How do you handle it?
From my little bit of experience it seems that once they
get on a roll ...

I get a kick out of talking equipment them whether it is photo or video. I know enough about photography equipment to be smarter than your average uncle and way more about video equipment. If they come across as a know it all then I just start asking questions and throwing around terms and data that will totally confuse them and make them realize the really aren't a know it all and they leave me alone.

I did a wedding once where the grooms uncle had a GL2 just like the one I was using. He was pretty cool and did his best to stay out of my way and leave me alone...was the first person to shake our hand and compliment us after the SDE played. Smile

You know, when he said that the difference between his cam and
the pro's cam is that the pro's cam is better in the auto modes,
I almost took it a bit personally. Maybe he was suggesting that
the reason the pro's pictures are better than his is because
the pro is using a cam in auto mode ... and it's the cam
and not the pro's skills that make the nice picture.

You have some folks who look at a nice picture and they
comment "you must have a nice camera to take a picture
like that" - as if it's the camera that does it.
But you never hear someone who's a good writer and say
"you must have a nice pencil".

That's where you find a subtle way to say a pro with a consumer camera can take better pictures than an amatuer with a pro camera. It's not the equipment but the user. That is true to an extent. We all say it is the content and how the creator creates it. At some point though pro's work on a level playing field skill and ability wise and it is at that point the sometimes equipment can matter or make their work different. If you as a photo pro ( I don't profess to be one) had 2 cameras, a Rebel XTi and an EOS MarkIII which one is going to be better for you. The rebel will take great pics and in the hands of a pro can take stunning images but in the hands of the same pro the EOS MarkIII is going to do even more because of the increased control the cam provides and the improved sensors.

You thought of the scenario in a different light than I would have talking about the reason a pro's pics are better is because of the cam. Sometimes when presented with scenarios like that I just don't interpret stuff that way. Must be a personality quirk or a strength....I don't know. People will something to my wife and I and she will take it as an slam on us personally or professionally.....I hear it and often don't see it that way. My wife has the ability to read into a situation, or something that was said, information that may or may not have been intended. I will see the same situation and it just won't bother me or I will just think the person is not intelligent...she will take it as a personal attack. I don't know if it is a shortcoming or a strength.
