Unique new cam from Sigma: Compact with full-size sensor Can't Post

Anyone heard about or wanting this camera? Supposed to be
for the serious enthusiast.

It's the first compact with a full-size APS-C sensor, giving 14 megapixels.

Here's a video about it:

Supposed to be available this spring.

I don't follow the compact digital cams much - I've never
had one - but I'm wondering if you think the fixed focal length
will be quite a turnoff to the typical compact buyer?

It's a fixed 28mm lens which, to my understanding, is
on the wide end of what compact users are used to.
(I think most compacts only go to 35mm at the widest.)

And it's not a real slim cam for pocekting - it's 2" thick.

What the cam will be selling on is that it has the largest
sensor in a compact digital. The sensor is a 4:3 sensor,
similar to what's in the Olympus DSLRs.

Suggested price will be $1000, with April availability.

What do you all think? Will the fixed focal length hold back
the camera's sales?

I don't know, I mean they're appealing to a different market group being a full sized sensor but the people who mainly care about that would more than likely want an interchangable lens, wouldn't you think? And for $1000, why not buy an SLR and lens?

Mind you my point and shoot is a chunky sony cybershot and I bought lens adapters for them to turn it into a macro. But sometimes I wish I had one of those little skinny cameras to stick in my purse when I'm out and about with the kids.

You're right, there aren't many wide angle compacts. But there are a few. The Canon Elph SD870 is a 28mm model. My uncle has one and it's a great little camera for the price. Although it's almost too small to hold comfortably.

Yeah, I know. Laugh

But I hear the sensor is something like 5X - 8X bigger than most
point-and-shoot sensors.

I guess they're expecting street price to be around $850.
But I've heard some people say that for around $300 you
can get a smaller compact with zoom. But then others
counter that the noise will be higher with the $300 model.
But do compact buyers care all that much about noise?

Yeah, I took a look at that Canon Elph. I see the max lens opening
is f/2.8. The max lens opening of the new Sigma is f/4, which means
the Sigma allows in only half the light to the sensor as compared to the
Elph.

Most compacts seem to go to 35mm at the widest. And
35mm is not really a "wide angle" at all so most of the
point-and-shoots don't even have wide angle capability.

I recently shot some wedding pics with a 35mm lens and would
not describe it as "wide angle". I would say 28mm is the
first step into the wide angle territory.

Heard a little more news on this new Sigma.

Street price will be around $800. To get the little viewfinder
that goes on the top is around $125 extra.

Max ISO is 800. It has a Foveon sensor, which I've heard
gives a lot of noise at high ISO. And it's blotchy noise, which
they say is tough/impossible to get out in post.

I don't know ... usable ISO of (maybe) 400 or less ... max
f-stop is 4.0 ... $900. Price seems a bit steep. Not good
in low light. And a lot of consumers aren't going to
be used to being restricted to 28mm.

What do you all think? Good seller?

Hmm, doesn't sound like a good invention to me, but what do I know.

My guess it was invented by the same person who came up with this hideous thing

He got fired from the car business for making an ugly useless car, then went to work for Sigma to make a ugly camera that doesn't offer very much.

(this was my attempt at humour, you may laugh now)
