Upload speeds for photos Can't Post

I was just curious as to what would constitute a slow upload. It seems like things are just in slow motion lately when uploading to the internet.

I'm currently uploading photos to my shopping cart and the speed says 54 to 60 KB. Since I'm lacking knowledge in this field (internet illiterate) those numbers mean nothing to me, but it seems to be slower than normal. I don't typically pay attention to those numbers so I don't know if this would be considered the regular speed or not.

I'm using DSL through my phone company.

So ... is this slow, average, fast ... ?

Thanks ~

It really just depends on the service you are paying for. On a general basis, when a company quotes you a "speed" they are referring to your download speed - how fast you can retrieve data. Upload speeds are usually a fraction of that. I can pull over 2 megabytes a second from a good source, but I have a cap at 128kbs upload, and that depends on the system that is receiving my files and other factors. I usually average under 100kB/s

Most people don't pay attention to whether the 'b' in 'kb' is lower case or upper case. It's how we differentiate between whether we're talking units of bits or bytes. Big difference between the two. If yours is lower case (i.e. kb) then you're measuring in bits, and have a fairly slow upload speed. Compare your speed to the average dialup modem connection at 30-40kbps. However, if it's displayed in uppercase (i.e. kB) then you're measuring in bytes (keeping in mind there's 8 bits in 1 byte), and it's a relatively fast speed.

Here in the Toronto area we pay about $45/mth for 7Mbps download speed (7Mbps = 7000kbps = 875kBps...all three of these numbers are the exact same speed, just different units of measurement) and 0.5Mbps upload speed (0.5Mbps = 512kbps = 64kBps).

MBps = megabytes per second
kBps = kilobytes per second
Mbps = megabits per second
kbps = kilobits per second

I'm using Fire FTP within Fire Fox. It displays as 54.17 KB/s.

I'd guess you're getting approx. 432 kilobits per second upload speed, which is pretty good (54 x 8 = 432). About average for North America. Compare to much of Japan who has FTTH upload speeds at an amazing 100Mbps (equal to 12.5 megabytes per second, or approx. 100,000 kilobits per second!)
