What's that photoshop effect where you combine 3 images? HDR Can't Post

I forget the name of it but it was discussed here
a while back. You combine 3 identical shots into
one finished image, but each of the 3 shots was
exposed differently, through bracketing of the
exposure so as 1 shot is normal, 1 is lighter, and
1 is darker.

Thanks, jg.

Do you have any experience with this?

I have a picture where I bracketed the exposure. The 1st shot
has the subjects' skin properly exposed but the background
is overexposed. The 2nd shot has the subjects underexposed
but the background is exposed properly. I want to combine
the subjects of the 1st photo with the background of the 2nd
photo.

I'm not experienced with photoshop. I was thinking that maybe
using some of the same techniques used for the HDR work would
be the way to go. Anyone have any thoughts so far?

I tried taking the 1st photo where the background is overexposed
and using a slider to reduce just the highlights (i.e. the background)
but this also brought down the light on the subjects so this
will not work.

The thing there is that when you use the HDR preset it will combine your images so that if you are using a human subject they would have to have been perfectly still for all three exposures. Otherwise you would get a blurry subject but the background would look great.

Well, I shot these in bracketing + burst mode so the subjects are almost
in identical postions.

The "HDR preset"? Is that in photoshop? I'm using Elements.

Is there any way it could be done with a mask?

Stack all three images, add a layer mask to the top two while holding the ALT key. This will create a layer masked filled with black. "Paint in" the hidden layers using a white brush on the masks.

One thing that comes to mind is Auto-Align Layers (new function in CS3). PS will combine number of layers in register and you can select best features of each image. Example: to eliminate 'blinkers'.

The other is Auto-Blend Layers - meging the layers via masks, tone, and colour matching.
