When to format card? Can't Post

I heard someone say it's better to format then it is to
"erase all". Supposed to prevent corrupted files. Anyone know
anything about this?

EVERYWHERE that I've read/looked says to format the card (in the camera not the computer or card reader) Some even say format couple of times prior to use. When you just erase there is still "stuff" on the card that can corrupt the images. (I think.... Crazy)

Yes it is. Many cameras record files exactly like PCs did in the 90's. The FAT16 system was infamous for becoming corrupted, and to add insult to injury it employed a central table of pointers to keep track of where all your files were located on the disk (kinda like the Registry in Windows). Failure at this single point can cause anyone to have a really bad day. Once that File Allocation Table becomes screwed so are you. Kiss your photos goodbye or at least face a big data salvage bill.

Simply deleting your pictures will not re-write this critical File Allocation Table (FAT), however reformating will indeed. Always reformat in the camera. Don't use Windows to reformat as it uses either FAT32 or NTFS which are totally different than FAT16.

Do you need to erase the files before you format? Or doesn't it matter?

When I first got a DSLR, I'd read all of the above stuff on other forums, so I've never once even used the "erase all" command....it's just as simple to format the card....same menu screen.

I did the same thing with my little Sony P&S that uses floppy disks. Sly
