Who's doing Fong's wedding? Can't Post

Anyone here get an inquiry from Fong?

A photog I worked with recently told me that when the
rich and famous get married they usually hire
a film guy.

Fong only hires people who have a blog??? That's weird.
Maybe that's so he can get some free publicity - you
know how a lot of these blogs seem to
be just vendors complimenting each other on the
"amazing blog". One'll go on one's blog and then
the other goes on the other's blog ...
Maybe Fong figures she'll blog all about the wedding
vs. hiring a videog who doesn't have a blog and hence
no free publicity.

And I wonder if The Pro figures she has to use some of Fong's
flash diffuser devices or he'll be insulted. LOL.
I mean, think about it. You go to take some snaps
of Fong and his bride and you're using a Stofen Omnibounce
or something from Lumequest. Laugh

I wonder if Fong is going to make Julie do table interviews?

If anyone is looking for some ideas for doing the
interviews maybe check out this clip I came across - this one
girl's got some teeth:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=O_erLC0W1qE

Oh ... and if you look close in the video you can see the

photog walk by in the background - they always stand out

in a video because of the white shirts they tend to wear.

Are you looking for the official photog at a wedding??? Look for the guy with the camera wearing a white shirt - so true!

Yeah, the replies on the photog/videog blogs pretty much are just photogs and videogs patting each other on the back. No problem with that...I'm sure the networking helps each other. It's too much for me to swallow, since it's so shallow and transparent, but then again...I don't pretend to be "into" weddings and everything that surrounds them. I just get paid to shoot them as best I can. Laugh

Yeah, you can bet that place will be DIRTY with Fong-o-spheres/Whale-Tails, or whatever he calls them, as well as Rock Star camera purses/sacs. If I got hired to photo his wedding, I'd show up with my Flip-It and a ShadowSac. Laugh

You're absolutely right about the white shirts....that's exactly why I dropped the black shirts, and started wearing white, or other brightly colored white/striped shirts. I WANT people to see me now...I want people to see the videographer, and ask who it is, and book me for THEIR wedding.Cool Screw trying to look unobtrusive and dressing like a freakin' ninja.

It's too much for me to swallow, since it's so shallow and transparent ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, "transparent" is the word. I bet there's even some potential clients who are turned off by a vendor who has a blog - I think I might be if I were looking to hire someone. I'd wonder if the vendor might be a bit more toward the flaky side and stuck on themselves, rather than down-to-earth. And it seems the latest trend amongst photogs is to try to come off as being "fun" - a "fun" person. Myself, I'd be more looking for someone who takes the type of pictures I would be wanting rather than to hire someone who's a clown. I saw where someone in the Members Only said along the lines "I didn't know you could be a photog these days and not have a blog". Shoot ... I actually have worked with a number of photogs who not only don't have a blog, they don't even have a website. Or some only just have a single page website that they made themselves with, like, their name, six small pictures, and their phone number. Most of their business is referal or yellow pages or handing out business cards at events. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I got hired to photo his wedding, I'd show up with my Flip-It and a ShadowSac. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You mean the ShadowSac is for guys, too? Smile -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're absolutely right about the white shirts....that's exactly why I dropped the black shirts, and started wearing white, or other brightly colored white/striped shirts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are you serious? "Mr. Discreet" not dressing Ninja???

That's funny, same here. I worked with this cool photog a while back who didn't have a blog OR a website either. I asked if he had a website I could check out, and he laughed and said,"oh yeah, I've been meaning to get around to that." He shot the entire wedding and reception from an old-school tripod mounted medium format camea. He said he's just never needed a website to book as many weddings as he needed. The B&G told me he was NOT cheap. He did have a website that I found, but it was only for his eccentric hobby stuff, which was nothing to do with photography.Laugh

just got back. It was an amazing wedding. Everyone was soooo nice and the couple was great. Just wanted to clarify that the blog helped us get the business because Gary & Missy (and all of our other perspective clients) could see our most recent work along w/get to know our personality and read feedback all on one page. Blogs rock and I'm stickin to it!!!

Re: [RustyB] Who's doing Fong's wedding? [In reply to] Can't Post

IMHO, this is a really sad thread.

Are we really stooping so low to bash another business person's success?

Some of the comments in this post border on middle school jealousy and envy. Of course this is just my opinion and the memories I have of kids putting down other kids just because they are doing something different and G*d forbid better than they.

I don't have a blog, but I can't imagine why any intelligent, level headed person would NOT hire a vendor because they have a blog.

What I get from the conversation here between Brackish (who are you hiding from?) and Rusty (sorry but you sound like you hate your life), is a business person can be successful if:

They don't have a blog
They don't have a website
They only get referrals from other brides
Networking with other vendors is not necessary therefore optional
Outdated equipment is fine for the job

So? Live and let live.

How come you both choose the above type businesses to hail yet bash
another company that has a different opinion and recipe for success for their business?

Correct me if I'm wrong in thinking that Brackish and Rusty sound like jealous, envious persons.

Jealous no, envious no, just a little bit pessimistic, or resistant to change, I really cant decide between the two. I do enjoy what they contribute to this community, they make great suggestions and can be extremely funny. I dont think that they are trying to bash someone, I realy think that they know what works for them and are vocal about sharing it. There is not one correct way to run a business, there are many correct ways. Their way works for them, julie's works for julie, yours works for you, mine sometimes works for me. Laugh You get the idea. I don't think that attacking Brackish, or Rusty is going to do any good other than getting someone upset. By the way I think both business styles are great for their intended markets, and that is something that is very important to evaluate.

Thank you for your response Tim.

You wrote: I don't think that attacking Brackish, or Rusty is going to do any good other than getting someone upset.
------------

So you're saying you don't think they were attacking Julie, her blog, her success? Or anyone who has a blog, etc.? That's perfectly fine if you didn't see it that way. But that's the way I saw it. That they were attacking anyone who is more successful than they are because they are doing something different.

How does one describe what is a successful business for them anyway?

Is it where we live? How much money we make? How many friends we have? How happy we are with our life?

C'mon Julie, you know that's BS. You get the calls because you're talented, PERIOD. Knock it off w/the blog crap already!

Read Marshall McLuhan's rather heady 'The Medium is the Massage' and you'll see more clearly. Or not.

BTW the title is a misprint but he left it unchanged because it reinforces his points, apparently.

Terry ... take a look at the overall posts in this forum and who's posting. This is as close to a blog as you can get without actually calling it one.

I will occasionally post a question on photoshop but that's because there are one or two people that can actually help. (Thanks Postal.) Otherwise ... it's pretty much just useless rambling.

If you check in here at all you'll see this is actually nothing new ... just a continuation. Certainly nothing here that would make someone actually want to join VU.

I think it's fine that you spoke up ... some of us are just more used to ignoring it. Unsure

Ok thanks Sparky. I didn't realize it was a little game, I thought they were being serious.

Actually someone on another forum was talking about this thread and I peeked in. What they said was something pertaining to Brackish being a serious jealous MF, so perhaps my perception of the thread was distorted beforehand.

Those guys never are cheap - atleast the ones I work with.
One of these guys I worked with ... the couple and whole
family were falling all over themselves telling him how
glad and fortunate they were that he was available to do their
wedding.

The bride's family, who hired this guy, were rich so they could
afford his fees but the bride's Mom did everything she could
to try and get deals and reductions on the video fee.

This photog was actually really nice to work with - maybe
the fact that he spent a lot of time sitting at the bar
downing mixers had something to do with it. Smile

Oh no ... don't get me wrong ... I think you pretty much were correct in your first post. Just the fact that you're not here that often you've probably missed quite a few other threads along this same line and to those of us who do check to see if there's anything that will actually help our photography business ... we're a bit jaded.

contemporary and high quality product, great repoire (sp:) w/client & vendors, great networking, and innovative marketing.

in case you are wondering, the blog comes under the "innovative marketing" category :)

There's not much about computer software nor web marketing I wonder about. I've forgotten more about these topics than most people will learn in a lifetime.

FYI, in case you weren't confident on 'innovative' being the best adjective to use...people have been using blogs to spew crap about themselves since the early 1970's. But hey, some people call Microsoft innovative, too.Laugh And if you're not privy I suppose 'innovative' is as appropriate of a description as any other. Wink

I wanna be innovative, too. Tomorrow I'm going to use my camera lens to start my fireplace. There's far better ways to start a fire of course, like using a match. Laugh But I wanna be innovative damit.

In jest. Peace.
