Worked with a High End Photog this past weekend Can't Post

He's a great guy.. we have networked a little in the past but this was the first opportunity I've had to work with him. I had no idea he charged so much money... $7000 for both he and his wife to shoot a wedding day... $7000, plus prints...

My thoughts are to start moving forward in photography fast... learning as much as I can... and one day photography will be my main income... Does anyone know of any shooting seminars... seminars offering posing techniques, etc..

What got me was $7000 PLUS PRINTS! My biggest package is about $4500, but MOST of that is just print costs (I offer a lot of prints with the package so that is where the price comes from). I haven't booked any, but I'm just starting to promote myself a little.

$7000 for shooting and prints on top of that...I would quit my job. I wouldn't NEED insurance at those rates, I could pay for major surgeries out of pocket Unsure

It seems like having to advertise a really high package price because of all the included print costs would be terrible for business. Some photogs tells me that they still make a lot on prints, but it still seems you'd be better off advertising a smaller price, and just letting the customer buy their own prints. Or, at least keep the print credit minimal, or at more inflated rates. For example, offer $500 in print credit with your package, but make sure the actual prints only cost YOU like $25 or less.

Then again, the higher price probably makes you more appealing to high-end brides. Makes you sound like you must know what you're doing!

I don't do weddings, but I finally did sell a print.....to my Mom. Laugh She bought a 16x20 print of one of my "lightning strike" photos, and gave me a frame to put it in. It only cost like $20, but she insisted in giving me all the money in her wallet...like $100! Gotta love parents....only Momma's think their ugly babies are beatiful. LaughLaugh

Re: [RustyB] Worked with a High End Photog this past weekend [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I'm kind of figured I would put the "and the kitchen sink, too" on the price list so that it looked like I had a high price...but towards the bottom, as the packages get more basic, I have the packages that don't include as much product on them and it goes all the way down to VERY basic. I guess the idea is that they get a "discount" if they just buy the package - say, they save $1200 over what would cost that much more if purchased individually. I set my prices up so that I get paid a certain amount for my on-site/travel time, and what I estimate the editing/ordering will take. Then I added up the cost of what else I would offer (my cost) and added that to my labor costs. That was my base (what it costs to make it). Then I added in the markup of each piece of the the package with a standard markup to get "what it costs them" and dropped the package cost by a percentage of the product markup. That way I get paid the same (per hour of photo/editing) regardless of the package they buy. That is my salary that goes for income. The package markup is business income that goes towards equipment and business expansion. So, I pay myself as a business cost in the form of salary and will funnel product profits back into the company.

If they order a smaller package (say a very basic "show up and shoot" package for under $600) and want to purchase individual prints I have those listed at their normal mark-up price as well.

Granted, like I said, I just started, so we will see how it works out.
