Photogs who show the couple the LCD Can't Post

I've been noticing this with some of the photogs I've
been working with lately.

What these photogs do is occasionally show the couple the back
of the cam after the photog has chimped the shot. The photog
is usually quite pleased with the shot and he extends out the
cam in front of the couple to show them what a good shot it is.

Do you approve of this? Is this proper? Would you (or do you)
do this?

I hate it. THere is a photog here that does it all day long and he is a pain in the you know what. Send me a PM with a name or two of the photogs you are referring to. I'm curious to see if it is the same as me. I can send you a video clip too that will freak you out with my experience.

I don't mine one or two times during the day when they get a really incredible shot but not constantly. Occasionally I will show a customer a nice clip if they are totally about the video or if I was working with them on something cool like a silhouette or something but not very often.

I like it when they are showing shots all day long and the wedding party is oohhing and ahhing over the shots then we smack them in the head at the reception and blow'em away.

We had one bridesmaid bragging during prep one day about how great her photog was and how the set the shots to music for them on a dvd. Then she saw our SDE. A week or two later I get an email from the Emirate Republic in Saudi Arabia where she worked and she wanted to know if we could fix her crappy video. Guess we educated her. Never got the video to play with though.

Send me a PM and lets swap a name or two.

Do you approve of this? Yes, within reason. Just don't make a pest of yourself... Is this proper? Why not? It increases the interaction between you and the subject/s and in my experience, most, 80-90%, will give a little ooo & ahhh of delight. People love instant gratification. Would you (or do you) do this? Yes, again, within reason.

This normally annoys ME, when I'm shooting video, but when I was shooting "corporate" (those restaurant pics) photo the other day with a VERY egocentric client and his manager wondering what I was doing, I couldn't help but show them the LCD. They loved seeing the pics on my 2.5" LCD.

To watch a photog do it seems really BIG-HEADED, but, in reality I think it gives the client some reassurance that you're not shooting crap...not to mention everyone likes to see themselves (or their products) on photo. Most people don't like to be videotaped....most people like it when they think a pro can take a photo of them that will work wonders and make them (or their product) look good.

So yeah, as much as it used to make me wanna puke when I watched photogs do this constantly...I can understand it now.

I show the kids, because usually as soon as the flash goes of they run up yelling "let me see! let me see!"

Grownups don't tend to do it as much, but kids just need some encouragement sometiimes. I even show kids the LCD on the video camera on a regular basis - just flip it around and it transfixes them and often makes them relax and smile at the video camera.

That's funny....I guess they're usually more up on the technology than old frackers like me...who chimp on their 35mm cams.Laugh

I hate to admit that I've flipped my video camera LCD around to shut up babies and get them to pose for the photog. Works every time. Cool

Nothing shameful in this Rusty. If a kid is crying or fidgeting if we can calm them down and make them smile so the photog can get a pic then we are showing we are a team player and helping. Only makes us look better. I do it all the time. Make sure to be rolling tape when this happens .... makes good bloopers.

I like to flip my screen around and just film kids sticking their nose up to the lens. They love it and it makes a fun break to a "romantic" video sometimes. I love to do it with my semi-fisheye lens....they love the distorted look and it is always fun to throw in the outtakes.

Absolutely! Except for any close-ups of childrens...they're WAY too quick with their fangers. Sticky kiddy fangers and lenses are like magnets...that's why I wear combat boots. Cool

I guess opinions may vary as to whether or not "increasing the
interaction with the sujects" is a good thing.

I know that one of the top guys in the field more-or-less prides himself
on being able to get the shots without having to interact with his
subjects.

Re: [Brackish] Photogs who show the couple the LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

Some time before the end of the night I like to rewind the ceremony to the vows and show the client the bride saying the vows. When they see what a great close-up I got and how great the pictures looks it will get them crying, even if they didn't cry when it happened. I'll show maybe a couple others -mom, dad, etc.

I noticed that this cut back on the emails shortly after asking when the ceremony would be online. I think the reassurance at the reception that we got great shots makes them less anxious to see the video, because there is always that fear that something went horribly wrong with the filming.

And I don't even say goodbye. LOL. But yeah, Kenneth, that's the first I've ever heard of a videog rewinding and showing the vows. Glad it works for you but I don't think I'd do this myself mainly because I'd like for them to see the vows for the first time in the finished video ... you know ... build up to it ... keep that edge of anticipation combined with a bit of uncertainty as to how well it all came out. Don't think I'd want to show the best parts of the movie outside the context of the whole movie. You know ... it'd be like letting the viewer see the Psycho shower scene before they see the movie.

I've seen it a couple of times. One photog got on my nerves, he kept showing them and saying "beautiful, this is just beautiful".
Whatever, shut up and do what you're paid for.
Probably the type of person who brags about everything.

But other than that obnixious chump I haven't seen too many people do it.

I've shown a shot or two when I'm out doing engagement portraits but usually make them wait until they get their proofs.

I just love when it's a two-photog team and they stand
around proudly showing each other shots - while they're missing
a bunch of good shots going on right around them while
they're busy chimping.

I agree that it seems like they are patting themselves on the back all day. And since we want the bride to be natural, a dozen shots of the bride looking at the photographer's LCD is very annoying.

hen we leave w reception we get lots of compliments on how hard we worked. So everybody feels good about us as far as effort and work ethic, but they haven't seen any video yet. Showing the bride a minute of the vows makes them feel even better about the outcome of their video.

What I do to address their worries that there might have been
a problem is ... A couple days after the event I review the tapes
and then drop them a quick note letting them know
all went well.

Oh there's no worries. I think except for a couple bridezillas I have complete trust of my brides. I just think it's nice to show them all went well and they will receive a video comparable to the one I showed them as a demo.

I have been putting the ceremony up on my website for the past year well before the couple will get their DVDs. It is just basic stuff, not what they will be getting on the finished product. More than once I have had the bride gush about how wonderful it is, only to hear nothing about the finished product (which is much more polished). I believe that this is because it is that first look that wows them.

I am thinking about doing a trailer to put on the website to keep them in anticipation rather than the ceremony.

Hi, Alan.

I would think they would have plenty of anticipation without putting
up a trailer. Making a trailer to build anticipation seems to
be putting a lot of time and effort into something that's not
really needed.

I think it's just one of the many trends that the "top" videographers are doing to push the wedding video BUSINESS in the WRONG direction.

I believe that if wedding videographers actually listened to what brides REALLY want, instead of trying to convince them what they need to buy...and trying to impress other videographers, their business would be much more prosperous. But I'm obviously not an expert. Laugh

I bet they tell you the same that they tell me. They want something simple that captures the ceremony, speeches and reception that looks professional.

I don't spend endless hours editing a wedding video because people here don't want to pay for it and I doubt they can be bothered really. I'd rather come out making a half decent wage/hour with each wedding.
I can also add that I get e-mails, or thank you cards from almost every one of the bride's I've done weddings for thanking me for their video and it is just what they wanted.

I wonder if you offered a trailer as a separate ala carte line item (i.e. an "add on"), how many clients would buy it?
Say you give it a price of $250, I bet not many would go for it.
And if basically no one is willing to spend for it, that tells you what it's worth to them.

Even the "Highlights" videos that I include with my package now for free, I used to sell as an add-on for $100usd. They are what the clients love about my videos, and what brings in the business. However, in a couple of years, I sold maybe ONE. Now I have to do them for free, as part of my $999 edited package, just for the marketing value of having them out there. If it's not "included" as part of the package, clients just don't want to pay extra for it.

That's why I'm trimming the cheese, and moving towards what I PERSONALLY feel brides want....simple, WELL made videos, with no extensive editing, no countless minutes of boring chicken dances and drunken guest interviews, just the important stuff, delivered in a TIMELY manner...i.e. the next business day after their wedding. And this allows me to produce them at a price that the AVERAGE bride is more willing to spend....getting more quality wedding videos into the hands of brides, while me potentially finally earning a small profit.

I plan to do the same with wedding photo....I won't be trashing any bride's dresses, I won't be blogging about it, I won't be hocking expensive gadgets or seminar tickets to other wanna-be photographers, etc. I'd rather turn out a quality no frills product in a timely manner, and spend my days AWAY from the computer enjoying life before it quickly slips away. Cool

Oh yeah...but I'll still probably show the bride the LCD. Laugh

Awesome! That's exactly where I'm trying to get! I've always been "cookie cutter", BUT, I still put way too much time into them. My new "Classic" package is what I'm now pushing...it's what just about EVERY bride says is exactly what she wants....just like you said. I can't wait to delete my heavily edited package altogether.
