blast! did it again. Can't Post

I'm so bloody snap happy I forgot to check my shutter speed. I got so cought up in composition or lighting that I was having too much fun.

I was taking 2 photos of something I will never again get to see and I botched it. :(

I only say this as I hope someone can learn from my mistakes.
I guess the silver lining is that this is simply a result of loving the camera so much.

har har

No, I had taken my dog to the park on her last good day and played ball with her (which consisted of me throwing it no more than a few inches away from her body) - she still lunged for it. My shots are blurry.

OH well.

Yikes. You mean she's gone now? (as I remove foot from mouth). Is that what the 'missyoushadow' address is about?

It can happen to anyone. When I first went digital I thought the VR function of the new Nikkor lenses could let me avoid spending big bucks on faster glass. Doesn't work with subjects who like to move around, like children. All the VR does is hold the glass steady, does nothing for shutter speeds directly. I found out it's a recipie for nice, sharp backgrounds and foregrounds at insanely slow shutter speeds but the moving subject is still blurry (which is an 'of course' if you think about it...problem is I didn't think about it). I'm picking up a 85mm f1.4D in Mississauga in about an hour after the traffic dies down. Will remedy that problem in a jiffy.

I'm sorry they're blurry. Any image is better than nothing if she's gone, tho. Even blurry pictures might trigger nice memories twenty years from now.

It's probably too soon just now...but don't wait too long to start looking for a new puppy.

I know that it might seem like you're being disloyal to Shadow's memory...but a new pup will quickly win a place in your heart, while still leaving you all the good memories of your old friend.

Or you could wait, so that you don't pick one up on impulse for the wrong reason. One might be better off having one less to feed, clean up after, take out constantly, only to lose it in the end again.

Oh wait...nevermind...I'm thinking about women. Laugh

I met the cutest little puppy ever in the park today. It must be 30 years since I had a proper puppy, we got our latest dog when she was about 1. I had forgotten just how much of a laugh they are.

Actually, I got stirr crazy the day Shadow was put down, and ended up getting another dog the same day. He's no replacement for Shadow but it's nice to have him around.

Everyone tells me to get a dog because I've been single so long. They say one would help me meet girls and keep me company. 'They' don't know me very well because on the long list of things I should get one day, a dog comes right after hemorroids and beer allergies.

Re: [Shadow] blast! did it again. [In reply to] Can't Post

At least you didn't get paid to make blurry pictures. I charged a couple quite a lot for a shoot of their daughter and ended up with a card full of blurry images. Got about 10 sharp ones out of 80 or so exposures. They didn't want anything posed, just let the kid go where ever she wanted and I was to follow. I'm an amature with artifical lighting and children. F3.5 isn't nearly fast enough glass for hyper kids in the studio, even with a 1000 watt lamp. So today I picked up an 85mm f1.4 and will never get a card full of these useless pictures again...

I find that wandering around with a camera gets more than enough interest. It is interesting to see just how many women want the satisfaction of being asked to have their photo taken. I just wish I knew this 20 years ago.

Well, thanks Heidi. I guess it doesn't look too bad at this tiny size but on paper it looks terrible. Was very frustrating to come back to the office after the shoot and see these images. There were some choice words said to myself (out loud).

Yea I could get away with that down at my Dad's place in Florida Colvin, no problem. But not my hick town. So many girls around here either have lumber jackets on, metal things stuck in their faces or are just way too uptight (or all three)Laugh. They'd look at me like I had two heads if I asked a stranger to take their picture. You must live in an easy-going place. Gawd I love St. Pete area. Everyone's so friendly and open-minded down there.

EDIT: NOT YOU HEIDI!! (I forgot for a second you live near me)Smile

Been there. Got desensitised to nekid people and I didn't like it after a while. It's pretty bad when you'd rather see a girl in jeans and sneekers than nothing at all.Unsure That was years ago. Now I like seeing nekid women again Smile

Edit: I just 'got' your guy-with-a-camera joke. lol...I'm without sleep today...a little slow on the draw

Hi Heidi,

Sorry to hear for your lose. I already told my Dudley that he has to live forever. he doesn't have a choice.

One thing I learned very quickly is always shoot animals and babies with fast shutter speeds, b/c they like to move... a lot. Very quick, unpredictable movements.

Although - gotta watch your DOF. make sure if there are multiple subjects in the portrait that they are all on the same plain or you will still have issues, esp at 1.4. I learned that the hard way, too. Now, I'm careful to shoot couple or group portraits at f5.6 or f8.

Hmph - I hate learning the hard way. Frown

Re: [Jenn M] blast! did it again. [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks JennSmile. That is very wise advice indeed. Do you shoot the same glass? I've been playing all day with it and just LOVE IT. Crazy sharp.

Wish I were around here months ago to receive your generous heads-up when I started shooting the 200 f2. Cut the teeth on ultra shallow dof with that lens and yes, learned the hard way. Only thank goodness I wasn't the paid photog at the 200's first gig...just a guest taking snap shots (so I guess it wasn't so 'hard' afterall, but I still kicked myself over something that seems so common-sense). Looking for that nice soft bokeh can get one in biiiig trouble. AF is almost useless at huge apertures. I owe so much to my friend for letting me shoot his very rushed wedding he has no idea. The only time I make these mistakes nowadays is at those wild country gigs where the groom forces me to drink with him Angelic

Note to self: pretty arm but you missed the face idiot.Smile

Note to self: The back of her head is nice and all, but faces are important too Smile
(good example of the 'same plane' you spoke of)

Thanks again,
Darren

Re: [Brackish] blast! did it again. [In reply to] Can't Post

Brack you could go about three slower in the same environment, just like the manu claims (so in your example about 1/8th with no caffine in your veins). For once it's not like the notebook computer manus claiming battery life of five hours only to deliver forty five minutes. It's really true what they claim, and it's true optical vr not useless digital vr. Just remember for moving subjects it sucks. Major recipie for sharp grass and blurry soccer players.
