dslr purchase...canon or nikon??? Can't Post

I'm in the market to purchase a digital SLR. Have narrowed down the choice to the Canon 20D or the Nikon D70. Does anyone use these two cameras....and if you do, which one do you like best? I've read reviews for both and those who write the reviews say that have had difficulities with customer service for repairs with both companies.

Has anyone had any problems with either camera?

Thanks.

Mac or Windows

Vegas or ________ (fill in the blank)

Tough one I'm sure you'll get many opinions...
My form neighbor (a professional photographer w/ 20+ years experience) swear by (not at) Nikon camera & lens... but I've seen and heard good stuff about the Canon 20d...

I'ld pick the Nikon

Exactly! I don't think you can go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I don't own either, but every wedding photog I've met uses one or the other, except for the film guys I've worked with.

There are alternatives. If you're shopping for cams in the D70 market, check out the E-500, or the new E-330, from Olympus. I recently bought an E-500, some lenses, and a flash, and couldn't be happier. Of course, the only other digital cam I've owned was a Sony Mavica that used floppy disks.

I'm still not real thrilled about digital photography, but then again, I'm not a wedding photographer. If you've never owned a 35mm SLR, do yourself a favor, and buy a cheap one on eBay, and learn to shoot on film. Every 35mm shot I take is a well planned work of art, in my eyes. But with digital, I've shot several thousand pictures in the last few months, and haven't printed a single one.Crazy

Good luck!

Linda - Don't buy either camera. I own 2 D-70's and they are o.k.but toys compared to the Nikon D200 or a Canon 5D. Spend more money now and get a better camera. You will only spend more later when you upgrade. If you must buy either of the two you mentioned buy the D-70S or the 30D and buy good glass. Lenses are along term investment. Technology will change the camera bodies but the lenses will go from camera to camera to camera. I've only had my D200 for a week but I already know I don't want to use my D70's again.

Like George says, base your choice on the lenses you will be using now and in the future. Canon has some great lenses and I think is the only full frame option at the moment. For me, I think Nikon has the better choice of affordable useable lenses, so that I can put a kit together for £1000 that will bring in £2000 per wedding shoot, which is what it is all about.

If you are perhaps a little hesitant to sink big bucks into a camera you may want to examine the Fuji S-9000. Less than $600 gets you max 9 MP in either 4:3 or 3:2 format as well as lower resolutions. There is also live view of images in both viewfinder and LCD, video recording, 28-300 permanent lens, the ability to use just about any flash ever made, PC cord firing of external flash, traditional mechanical cable shutter release. manual zoom and manual focusing just like in the old days. Uses CF and/or XD cards. None of those SD cards that are way too easy to lose. There are also two custom WB settings. I particularly like the "historical display (my words)" option which lets me see the 3 previous images shot. Really helps me keep track of where I have been, so to speak.

I bought one for my architectural photography. My Canon WD-58 adapter lens does an admirable job of expanding the lens to around 20mm (in 35mm terms). I found the camera's menu controls to be much more like operating a traditional 35mm camera. In manual exposure mode I found it much easer to determine aperture then adjust shutter speed.

It is not marketed as a pro camera, but pretty close. Besides, "pro" really is the eye behind the lens.

So far this camera has met my needs quite well. I can not compare it to either Nikon or Canon as I have never used either.
