jpg or raw? Can't Post

I just picked up a Nikon D50. What image quality/size do you capture in... raw or the best jpg setting?

After seeing the photographer at this last wedding... I am going to give it a shot.

Thanks
Mike R.

Well I'm certainly not the expert here but I'm shooting mine in JPEG large. I've heard that the RAW just gives you a little more control in post.

Thanks...
That is what I was told by a photographer friend... but I was curious what others were doing.

Processing Raw files used to be extremely time consuming. Just a couple of years ago when I had the 10D it was painful at best to work with the files. These days it's become much easier and working in Raw can save your behind. There's just a lot more latitude in working with the files.

Yes, you need more memory, but I think the benefits of working in Raw out weigh the additional cards that you'll need.

There are definitely those that use jpg, but until I really ... and I do mean really learn to nail my exposures, I'll stick with Raw.

So specifically can you tell me why i need to shoot in RAW? I'm curious and will make the switch if needed but what specifically will it allow me to do that I cannot do later with a JPEG in PS?

Yep...I used to shot in Jpeg and didn't really care about RAW till after I read the article and tried it out myself. Now..I won't shoot Jpeg if RAW is a option on any digital camera that I buy. Sure...there is always lots of post processing but it definitely is worth it to me. I rather not be limited by whatever Jpeg algorithm happens to be running in whatever camera I'm using.

The only circumstance that I can think of for me to shoot jpg is if for some reason I was going to fill all the cards I had left ... then I would switch to jpg for the reception. And then ... I would kick myself in the butt for not being prepared and promptly order additional cards.

Excellent points in that article. For me it has become RAW for photo sessions, JPEG for candids.

Reason I can't let jpeg go: Burst mode.

Explaination: The recording is slower for larger RAW files, and my buffer is quickly soaked up by RAWs thus reducing the number of burst shots I can get before camera is waiting for data to record. I am a burst addict during action sequences (cake smearing, walking in/out, etc.)

Admittedly, I am (need to be) more careful to white balance when JPEGing around though.
