oA little photo contest I helped with. Can't Post

For the last 2 years I have been working with some hand picked 4th graders at the local elementary school. They are called "video aides" but learn about photography and videography. Last year the kids were very driven and we ended up making an 18 minute adventure movie about their school. This year the group of kids were not quite as excited about it all and we pretty much concentrated on photography. In fact I don't think I ever took a video camera in to the school.

Each class has an entry level Canon point and shoot camera. Over the course of the school year we had the kids bring the cams when we met during their lunch time. I taught them about manual settings and why you use them. I taught about framing shots and looking for the artistic angles. Each kid brought in a bigger memory card so we could raise the resolution of our photos (the school leaves the cams at 640x480) but the kids always forgot to up the resolution when we took images.

We took a few trips around the school yard learning shooting concepts and then critiqued the work to show them how to make the shot better. At the end of the school year we had a contest to see who submitted the best artistic photo. Unfortunately they were all 640 x 480 so we can't blow them up big to hang in the administration building. The kids did a pretty good job and created a few interesting photos. Here are the 3 winners. What do you think for a bunch of 4th graders.

Here is 3rd place. If not for the cement to asphalt crack this may have scored higher.

Here is 2nd place. The only thing I didn't like about this one is the big orange support bar in the foreground. Move the camera angle a little and it would be pretty good...at least I thought so.

And finally the 1st place photo. I had 2 extra 4th graders helping me judge and as soon as we saw the photo we all fell in love with it. This was not taken on one of our little outings together. They created this one all on their own one day.

Overall it was a fun project with the kids. I hear the 4th graders coming up next year are a little more dedicated so we are hoping to do something video related again. I am thinking a short music video or small videos they can take with the point and click phones and edit in Windows Movie Maker.

Anyway....just wanted to share a fun project I have been involved with.

Shouldn't TV's Discovery Channel be on a different station every day?

That's pretty cool doing that! I think the msuic video thing would be very awesome.

I didn't know equipment like that could still be found in parks?? Everything I see now days is either soft plastic or covered with padding...god forbid a kid gets a bruise playing! Laugh

This thing with the schools is a nice little diversion to have fun now and then. The librarian I work with told me the other day the 3rd graders got to meet with the 4th graders to find out about all the cool things and responsibilities they will get to have next year (4th grade ends their time at this school....they then go to another school for 5th and 6th grade).

One of this years 4th graders told the 3rd graders, "Yea, if you become a video aide you get to meet the Frogman" How cool is that. I'm someone they get excited about hanging out with. I give the kids permission to call me Frogman instead of Mr. Hinkle. Otherwise the teachers will get on them for not showing proper respect.
