where is everybody? Can't Post

I have been checking this board everyday for the past week and no one is posting. Where is everybody? Have things slowed down for VU?

I'm here but have just been real busy between trying to eliminate my video backlog, selling my house, finding a new home and also finding a studio store front for the new Photo/Video business I am starting up when I move. I'll post some stuff soon.

I got side-tracked...had a technical summit in downtown DC that took a lot of time, and this new camera has a lot of buttons to learn Unsure

Hey Shane...I have been checking in around here too. I just got a RebelXT 350D. I hope to learn with it, make a few bucks on the side doing small stuff with it (basically a little extra to supplement my video income). I don't have any plans to jump into the wedding photo biz as a main thrust....sure video is more time consuming but I just get a kick out of doing it. I see photography as helping me learn some technical things that will inevitably make my videography better.

Here is a pic I took today while sitting outside have a java at the local shop. I took the cam in case a moment presented itself. This was a cute doggy that had been rescued from an abusive home. The owner was thrilled when I showed her the pics and she offered to buy them. I told her no but I would email a few to her.

They were shot RAW. I had a Sigma 70-300 lens on the cam. It is not the best lens around .... probably consumer level....but I was having fun and I think it turned out pretty decent. It may be a little underexposed/dark but I wanted it that way as it was cloudy and about to rain......I like the shadows on the right side to give it depth...don't know if those are great practices or not but I liked the look. It is all natural light...no flash. I did tweak it a bit in Raw form but it is pretty much as it happened.

I liked this shot even better. They seem darker to me on here than when I was working with them. The jpg compression must have monkeyed with them a little.

Those are nice shots, Philip. It's amazing how much detail those cameras can capture. Once you purchase a higher priced lens you will be amazed at the difference. I have a Canon 17-55mm IS lens and was blown away by the quality of the picture. Of course, not all the pictures I have taken have had that kind of quality, I am in the 25% range of all photos shot being good quality. There is so much to learn. Tonight I am going to try to process some of my shots from St. Simons Island this week and if I get a couple of nice ones I will post them to get some opinions. Boy, the last thread where I posted shots from my first wedding gig did not get many reviews.. I took that as "go back to the drawing board, Shane" So I am hoping this next batch of pictures is a bit more successful.

I do have a small Canon 50mm II lens that I got with the big zoom lens. I bought both used. From what I have read the little 50mm Canon II lens takes pics that rival the big expensive lens. It has a cheapy fell to it (plastic) but it is a 1.8 lens so it can do some cool stuff. I did some comparative shots with the 50mm and the stock lens I got with it and they are much sharper and a little better colors as well. Some of the reviews I read on the internet about the little 50mm lens is that it was so sharp that it was too sharp for some. Next time I wander down town for coffee I will be taking the little 50mm to see what happens. The nickname for the lens is Plastic Phantastic. The reviews I read said you can have many lens in your bag but you keep reaching for this cheap 50mm for many things. I will have to post a pic I took with it soon.

Here is a photo I shot this past weekend on St. Simons Island. It was shot with a Canon 30D and Canon 17-55mm IS lens.

Shane you were on my island! I have the opportunity any time i want to move my business down there. My mother and her husband keep telling me to move down there and they will help me get set up. It's beautiful down there and I go probably about three times a year but I don't know, the lure of the big city (Chicago) keep me here. Nice shots. I've got some to post too.

Hey Storm,, that is where my wife and I got married, at the Lovely Lane Chapel. We took our baby this year for the first time and as we were leaving we drove over to Epworth but did not have time to take a photo because the baby was sleeping. But that shot that you have there is the exact spot where I wanted to shoot my wife holding our baby up above her head with the chapel in the background. Tell your mom I will be a happy replacement for her son who does not want to leave the big city. We love that place.
