white balance in jpeg Can't Post

What is the easiest way to white balance a jpeg file in CS2. Remember ... jpeg as opposed to raw.

Thanks.

You can't do it on an 8bit file without trashing the image (i.e. tossing out data).

Is there any white in the image (or neutral color?) To remove a color cast you can do this:

Apply a "levels" correction layer.

In RGB mode (levels) double click the white eye dropper icon - then color pick the neutral color (white or gray)
This will pop up the color picker window.
Click on the neutral color in your image. This will highlight where that color falls on the color pallett
Drag the color pallet circle to the left and to the location you want you sample to be (brightness, white, etc)
click OK
Click with the eyedropper on the same spot that you used for the "White" sample
This will shift the image color to that level.
Click OK
Click "No" when it asks if you want to save it as defaults.

Is a "levels correction layer" the same thing as a duplicate layer? I'm not really up to date on masking layers and things like that.

it is just an "overlay" layer - you can make one by selecting the layer you want to modify, then clicking on the little half/full half/empty circle at the bottom of the layers pallett. It just allows you to add the effects without altering the original image so you can modify or adjust the effect.

You can do the same thing with just applying a "levels" adjustment to it, but that affects the image itself where and adjustment layer does not.

I have a WHiBal card. It is neutral grey (not 18% grey), and has a white spot and black spot on it. Take your first pic at a location with the card in it. In Photoshop, you can use the eyedroppers on it after to hit the black, white and neutral points then apply the same corrections to the shots from the same location. This site explains it way better!
