white balance settings Can't Post

What are you folks doing for white balance settings?
I've been using auto but do notice that from time to time the whites look a little blue. I can correct for this but it's a step I don't want to take. Sometimes I custom white balance but it is a PITA.

Anyone tried using exposure compensation/flash to resolve this situation?

AUTO WB for me.... I shoot in raw and adjust it in Lightroom (if necessary).... I'm sure "real" photographers nail it right the first time and don't do anything in post....

Thanks Mike
Do you ever get a blue tint to the whites when shooting without flash? Here's an example. Her shirt was white with pink and grey stripes.

Quite a few pics had her shirt turn blue. This was on auto w/b and the photo is pretty much as it came out of the camera, I do believe I boosted the contrast slightly but that is all.

On a side note - this girl had very long hair until recently, she got it all cut off to make wigs for kids with cancer. What a gal!

See, here's another one where her shirt went blue-ish

Sorry, I only know how to put one photo in a reply...

So when I used flash the colour came out correctly - as seen below. But I prefer the look of natural light.

Here's the flash photo - you can see the shirt is the correct colour:

Why not just put the cam in daylight white balance instead of auto? That's how I do it anyway.

I'm just paranoid I'd forget to turn it back.
I suppose it is no better than custom white balance settings.

I was just curious to see if others had this problem.

Yeah, I suppose when you shoot JPEG you have to worry about
that stuff. Smile

So here's some good info for you. Right now I happen to
be looking at some shots I took this weekend that
were done out in the sun. I shoot RAW so I can vary the
WB settings in post to see what it does. Here's what I found.
This is the ordering from having the whites look bluer
to having them be white (from the WB settings adding orange).

On Auto the whites are blue. A little less blue is Daylight.
A good look to the whites and skin is Cloudy. Flash is
warmer. And Shade is the warmest.

So, from most blue to least blue in the whites is:

1. Auto
2. Daylight
3. Cloudy
4. Flash
5. Shade (skin looking too orange)

Thanks Brackish.

Just did another pic at a different location and the Auto
was a little warmer than Daylight. If you like a bit more
warmth in your direct sunlight pics try Cloudy.

These were taken in open shade, not direct sunlight. But I guess the camera can't tell the difference.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to test it out.

Cheers

Same here. I have enough to worry about getting the white balance right when shooting video. At least with still photography using RAW, auto WB gets me in the ballpark, and Lightroom allows me to nail it.
