Well, after a LOT of research, and a fixed budget, I've finally purchased my first real DVCam. I went to www.buydig.com and picked up a Canon GL2 with the Exec upgrade kit. What is this leading to? I'm a member of the Star Wars generation, and because of that I have at least a few dozen Star Wars lines coming out of my mouth on a daily basis. I'm in the planning stage right now for my first short film. It will be based on the Star Wars universe, but from a point of view that a lot of Star Wars fans still crave. That's right, a movie that is focused on the "Dark Side" of the galaxy. Star Wars is a great story from the way George Lucas tells it, but it has a problem. The movie saga tells the story more from the point of view of the good guys trying to "smite" the bad guys. It doesn't really explain the trials and triumphs of the Dark Side. That's what the goal of my first short film, to tell the story of the Dark Side, what a Dark Jedi apprentice must endure to gain power, and the plots developed to overthrow the Light Side. The Star Wars video games as of late have started to allow the option to be a "Dark" player, but much of the games still focus on the good guys beating down the bad guys in the end. Yes, I know Episode III is going to be about how a good guy goes bad, but out of the 6 total films produced, this is the only one, in my opinion, that scratches the surface of telling the dark side of the story in more detail. 1 out of 6 leaves a lot to the imagination. I will most likely use a timeline that starts somewhere after the defeat of Darth Malak, about 2000 years or so. That point in Star Wars history seems to be fairly unexplored, even though some very ambiguous timelines have been published explaining what is kind of happening in the galaxy. Yes, this is a very challening goal, especially since Star Wars fans/critics watch new Star Wars short films with a magnifying scope and a fine-tooth comb, but I think this is a story that needs to be told.
