Copyrighting Materials Can't Post

I would like to know if you can legally use copyrighted materials (video/audio) in a video. I have noticed the different credits that are given in films for songs or footage that they have used in their movies. I would like to know the appropriate way to give credit, or if it is legally possible to do so?
Thanks!
