Feature Movie Making with DV Can't Post

I am a film maker who has recently switched to DV. I have made a number of 16mm films and feel relatively comfortable with the medium, but I have a number of questions about DV. For example, should I use the 16:9 setting on my camera (which causes loss in resolution) or should I shoot 4:3. I have been told that if I am going to transfer to film I should use 4:3, but if I am going direct to video use 16:9, yet others say the exact opposite. Are there anamorphic lenses sold for DV cameras? (I have a Sony TRV-900) Also what about showing movies on the net? I am unclear on how this works. Can you show an entire feature over the net? Are there other website, magazines, etc. that deal exclusively with these and other questions about DV movie making?
Thanks

Re: Feature Movie Making with DV Can't Post

Steve,
Just found a great article about "Shooting 16:9 widescreen on miniDV" at
http://www.victorfilmgroup.com/vidfilm1.html
There is an an anamorphic adaptor which squeezes a 16:9
image onto a 4:3 chip without losing quality. The article
above has a link to the Century adaptor.
It's not yet practical to show an entire feature on the
net. It will be within 5 years. You certainly can and
should promote your film on the net. Blair Witch Project
did this very successfully.
Good luck!
Hal

I have to disagree about the video on the net comment. It is very feasible to put your entire video on the net. High speed access is growing exponentially.
Write me if you have more questions.

:many prosumer mini dv format cameras are capable of changeing lenses so you can shoot in 16:9. Ive known people who have letterboxed there dv features in post. However I don't recomend trying (to much of a hassel).

Re: Feature Movie Making with DV [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes you can use anamorphic lens for the dv camera.
you will be shooting 25% more picture space.
You wont be able to monitor your frame as the subject will be tall and thin.the anamorphic lens tends to suffer from flare
so you need a good mini flaging kit.
You also cant get focus closer than +-4ft this defeats the feeling of close moves with the camera.
we have done tests with dvcam (pd150) blow up to 35mm
and found at 2k the camera in 16:9 internal mode will resolve
480 ver lines and 500 hor. not bad for a mini digital camera.
most of the cameras are not wide enough so you need a wide angle lens, you cant use one if you have a anamorphic lens...
