Hey Everyone,

We just finished shooting an action/thriller short film called BROKEN. Shot on the DVX 100a and did all the over 100 VFX in Final Cut Pro & Apple's SHAKE.

Click here to check out the trailer: http://www.whatisbroken.com/broken_trailer_enter.html

Also, check out our web docs w/ VFX Breakdowns: http://whatisbroken.com/webdocs.html

I really want to know what you guys think. Thanks for taking a look.

OK, first I know it was only a trailer so it's hard to actually give you my opinion on the movie its self but my friend if the movie delivers what the trailer promises then you have something special.

This is what I live for. People using digital not to shoot some lame wedding or boring video on how some company can boost profits but actual talented individuals pushing the envelope and showing Hollywood that they no longer have the hold on film-making they enjoyed for so long.

This is what the Digital revolution is about people. Every video production company in the world is now a potential film studio and they don't even realize it. Even if you don't have the talent yourself there are those who do that you can cultivate using your equipment and know how to make these movies. In other words be a film producer if you lack the actual story telling talent.

You would not believe the people who will work for free just to be a part of a film.

If you haven't checked out the link above do so now because it's the future of the video and film industry.

Congrats to all who worked on "BROKEN".

Almost forgot..................the look of the film is incredible!

He's using a 24fps digital camera with cinematic gamma control. I would Also guess he lit his movie as though he was shooting film-stock like 16mm. Maybe some color correction in post maybe not.

Hey Guys,

We just got back from the Toronto Film Festival and we met Roger Ebert. He did a review of BROKEN on his site (we are still trying to revive Jorge ; )

--------------

A festival like Toronto attracts hopeful filmmakers eager to pitch projects and find financing. Here, for example, are Alex Ferrari and Jorge Rodriguez, the director and producer of “Broken,” a 19-minute, $8,000 horror film containing, by their count, more than 100 visual effects.

“We’re here to talk about a development deal for a feature based on the short,” Rodriguez tells me, before the screening of “Twelve and Holding.” “Who you talking to?” I ask. “We’d better not say,” Ferrari says.

He gives me a DVD of their short: “We’ve already sold 1,000 copies online. It contains six commentary tracks and like three hours of information on how to shoot low-budget digital films and how to do the special effects. It’s like a training course.” They refer me to their web site, http://www.whatisbroken.com, and back at the hotel I view the film and visit the site.

The film is effective and professional and the ominous sound track works with the images to create the desired effect. Whether the plot quite rises above the level of “it was only a dream” I am not prepared to say. Whether the short will someday grow into a good film we will know only if the development deal goes through.

But that’s not really the point. The point is that gifted and ambitious young filmmakers can, with very little money, use the new digital technology to make a presentation that gets attention from industry pros. Kerry Conran’s “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” (2004) was floated the same way, with a home-made demo made on his Mac. Whether this is better than the old-fashioned method of submitting a screenplay is a good question; “Broken” is essentially a demonstration of the mastery of horror imagery and techniques. A screenplay has to also have dimensional characters (one, two or three dimensions, depending on its ambition) and a story. In an industry so impenetrable for newcomers, any way you break in is the right way. Then it depends on what you do. Looking forward to “Broken: The Feature.”

------------------

We are truly amazed! We were sooooooo excited that we had to share the news.

Also, just dropping some news that AMAZON.COM is carrying BROKEN: Special Edition DVD and can be purchased at: http://www.amazon.com/...3?v=glance&s=dvd

Hope this isn't to much of a shameless plug ; )

I just thought it was cool that amazon.com is carrying our little short film. Thanks again for all the support. Good luck with your future projects.

All the best,
Alex

Never has a truer statement been made. You guys are the poster children for how to make and market a digital film. Congrats on everything!

"not to shoot some lame wedding or boring video on how some company can boost profits but actual talented individuals"

You know pal, you could go about making your movies and feel good about it without bad-talking professionals in similar areas of your business...right? It's called crapping in your own backyard where I come from, and it's considered one of the furthest things from professional conduct.

Methinks (no, meknows) you're just another one of those flakes who must utilise the elitist mindset to prop yourself up each day. Pity. They're a dime a dozen and their talent, if any, is usually not remarkable.

With love,
Darren

P.S. Nice hat, you actual talented individual you Wink

Re: [mvmaker] MOVIE TRAILER: $8000 ACTION SHORT FILM (100 VFX SHOTS) [In reply to] Can't Post

It sounds to me like you're trying to say I can't be talented if I shoot wedding or corporate events. How boring it would be if we were all at your elevated status of being an "actual talented individual" making Hollywood movies. That's just not quite where I want to be. If that's what you choose, then great. Good luck with everything. But must you really talk down on those that choose a different path? It sounds like you've put yourself on a pedestal. Don't forget, the higher you are, the longer the fall.
