: I'm just getting started in film making and would like to know the best camera to start out with. I want to try to keep the cost down, but any sugg. would be appreciated. If it's film you want to shoot, I would look for a 16mm Arriflex SR camera. I've always liked the Arri's for their dependability and flexability. However having said that, I wouldn't necessarily buy a camera if you're just starting out. You can rent any number of different cameras depending on the type of film you're making. Even in Hollywood, it's common for producers to rent everything rather than purchase. If you're looking to shoot video, check out the Canon XL-1. This is a popular miniDV camera for many video shooters. You can also rent video cameras and all the associated equipment that you'll need for a particular shoot. As your skills grow and you start making more and more videos or films, you can purchase equipment as needed. Jim
