Script Writing Wolves Can't Post

Hi

I work with the team developing Celtx (www.celtx.com) the free, open standards based script writing application.

Celtx provides professional grade writing features, married to tools for people who work in pre-production.
Some say we should keep the interface limited to just writing. Others like the ability to also do breakdowns and collaborate with co-writers or crew members.
So, the question is – as screen writers, do you see yourselves as being lone wolves, with little or no participation in the movie making process – your job ending with the writing of the script – or do you see yourselves as part of the movie making process.
Thanks. Your feedback will be helpful to us.

Re: [Fred eh] Script Writing Wolves [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Fred -- sounds like a fun project you're engaged in.

I'm a script writer. I have three behind me, all un-produced. But I wrote 'em, and I'm proud of that! I have another in the hopper right now. I think I'm writing just to be writing -- but the practice is good for the craft. One of these days....POW!

I've been told by some pros that my job as a screen writer is to write. I've been told that directors, DPs, audio engineers, and others who weave magic for the silver screen take a dim view of a writer calling shots and giving actors direction.

As I pondered that advice it occured to me that I, probably, would feel the same way if I were a director trying to pull a performance from an actor. Maybe the writer could give some insight on the set, but pushing direction or camera angles in the script sort of imposes on other artists.

Writers write. I love it all and want to do it all. So I have two scripts of each story. One for me with all the fancy shots and direction...one for the director, where he can make up his own mind what he wants Tom Cruise to do.

Any help? Bests,

VQ

Thanks much for your reply. And yes, it is helpful.

Craig Mazin had a recent post to his blog about writers adding backgrounder information to their scripts in order to help people visualize the 'movie'...

This is one of the things that celtx allows you to do as a writer, and so while a standard spec script rarely has any "extras", the ability to provide a media rich context should appeal to the Auteurs out there. Given your own propensity to add context you might want to give celtx a look.
