Sony DCR-VX9000 or Cannon XL-1? Can't Post

Hi,
I'm about to buy a DV camcorder.
But I don't know which to choose between the Sony DCR-VX9000 or the Cannon XL-1.
Anyone experience with the two cameras?
Thanks
Marc Colemont

I'm sure you're talking about the Sony DCR-VX1000.
If I had the money I'd take the Canon due to it;'s ratig son better picture and sound quality. Though others will dispute this. I myself have done a lot of research on the Sony TRV900, you shouold check out JohnBeale's website on the TRV900... it could help you learn a few things about both the cameras you mentioned above. His website is www.bealecorner.com.....
You'll feel much better after looking through that website.

Sony just came out with the follow up to the VX1000 -- The VX2000.. This would be my choice if I had $3000.00 bucks lying around.. Thats still a bargain for a top-end prosumer camcorder.. The Cannon XL1 (good camera) will cost you more money for less camera (according to the spec sheets). Hope this helps.......

:Im with Jsun on this one. According to my research, the Sony VX1000 or VX2000 is the better camera. What sold me on the Sony was the fact that filmmakers (real ones who are actually making a good living making films)have been using the VX1000 WAY more than the XL1. When in doubt, I go with what worked for previous successful filmmakers. Plus, the Canon is really over priced for any minimal advantages (if there are any) over the VX1000 or the forthcoming VX2000. I do however like the look of the Canon XL-1 better than the Sony VX1000 but hey, it's what comes out of the camera, not what it looks like, right? Hope this helps, good luck. J.Lee

Nop, I'm talking about the vx9000, it's the big brother of the vx1000. You can find a photo on this website:
http://www.ecctv.de/eb/dv/9000.htm
I didn't knew that the vx2000 is coming out.
Thanks Mike for the info.
I will look at JohnBeale's website.

Hi,
I have owned a VX9000 for a couple of years now, and have used it on several broadcast documentaries. I think the size & shape make it handle much better than the XL-1.
I wish I had held out a little longer for the DSR 200, though, as it has pro Canon XLR audio inputs and the far-superior DVCam format (as opposed the the more domestic DVC), even though it is almost identicle to the VX 9000 otherwise.
If you have a little more money, the new DSR 300 seems to have won everyone's vote. Its much more of a pro camera, mainly due to its Canon lens which is removeable and so can be replaced with specialist lenses, wide-angles etc. The XL-1 also has this advantage.
Ultimately, I think my choice would be to go the extra mile and splash out on the new DSR 300, if you can afford it. Or get the DSR 200 (second hand?) if you can't.
All the best
