help on post production Can't Post

I am a commercial director in Hong Kong. Just wondering whether they are good sites to get help/ask for opinions from fellow filmmakers on filmaking techniques, especially when shooting post-production-heavy projects. I have very limited knowledge on what can or cannot be acheived in post. Thanks!

Justin,
You can always post your questions here. There are several people who have extensive production/post productions backgrounds.
Whenever I have an effects heavy project I contact the graphic/post house that I'm planning on using prior to shooting and get their input. The last thing I want to do is to start shooting and then have the post house tell me I'm doing it all wrong!

Re: help on post production [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Jim,
Thank you for replying. Unfortunately the post houses here in Hong Kong lack the kind of constructive input often given by post facitlities in the West. They are more often than not just operators. The directors usually have to come up with the creative ideas!
I am in preproduction stage for a mobile phone commercial. There is a sequence where the main character parachutes out of an airplane. I dont have access to a real parachuter! So i'm thinking of shooting blue screen to create the shot. For example a stationary plane for the person to jump out from with blue exterior. Then wire shots in a studio to shoot him in mid-flight, etc. I'm not sure the best way to go about it. I want the sequence to look relatively realistic.

Justin,
My first inclination would be to shoot it as an actual stunt. There are a number of great aerial cameramen, however I certainly don't know what the situation is like in Hong Kong for filming actual parachute jumps.
Your idea for shooting the whole thing as a blue screen is probably the best way to go. You could easily purchase a "falling through the sky" background plate from a western based skydiving cinematographer and combine it with your blue screen studio footage. Adding a powerful fan to the studio shoot would give you additional "realism". To add some additional realism to the in-flight airplane shots, don't have your camera rock steady.
You could also commission a western based production company to shoot some wide shots of a skydiver exiting the plane, falling through the sky, landing, etc. and then cut to blue screen close-ups of your actor wearing the same outfit.
Let us know if you need the names of any production companies in the U.S. that specialize in filming skydiving stunts. We'd be glad to help.

Re: help on post production [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Jim,
Thank you for your help. I've decided to change the scenario to para-gliding. There are para-gliders in Hong Kong and I think it will allow more control and flexibility on getting some good footage. Thanks again for your time and advise.
