What are the disadvantages of tape based linear video editing?

The supposed main difference between linear and digital editing is generational loss. The more you run a piece of tape across the heads of a tape deck. the more wear on colors ans sharpness of the original footage. With digital editing what you put in is what you take out and generally speaking you always have only 1 to 2 genarations as oppose to several with linear editing.
