I've had the chance to work with an FX1, and the Firewire-out is menu-switchable between outputting HDV or DV.

When set to DV-Out, it is the SAME as using any DV device. You can make Firewire dubs to another DV/DVCAM device, or capture to any DV NLE.

The signal is Letterboxed 4x3. The DV output looks much better than anything shot with a DV camera.

The down convert section of the z1 manual states that you have a choice of squeeze, letterbox, edge crop. It appears that the letterbox option will do what you want. I have not downconverted so I cannot state it as fact.

I haven't tried it but that is what the manual says.

You get a warning message if you try to change the settings when the i.link port is connected.

No, I meant it does not let you change the setting with the i.link in use.
