Wolfgang Winne (German video geek) has done a comparision of all the new HDV offerings.
That's got to be one of the toughest calls of all, because they're both awesome cams with various benefits and shortcomings.
I have both, and each of them is great for taking on a gig.
You'll wanna check out the new HC5/7 announced today at CES as well.

Spot,

What do you know about the HC5, compared to the HC1 & HC3?

The HC5/7 are the same form factor, just a tad larger than the HC3 and considerably smaller than the HC1. They're good cams with .5 clearvid chip, best light sensitivity of any of the small form cams. They're still quite small though...hard to hand hold well. Both have significantly improved stills.
Some notables...
- manual shutter speed adjustment
- focal lengths and shutter speed rates are numerically given
- no aperture control (no surprise)
- manual adjustment of audio levels via the touch screen
- running histogram while shooting
- 'guide frame' checkerboard lines for framing
- external buttons kept to a minimum
- extremely deep battery slot

I like em for what they are...Cost on them is darn right!

I had been planning on getting 2 HC3's. I have been shooting my low budget wedding videos with an HC1 and two 1 chip handy cams. I am trying to upgrade, but still can't afford the FX7.

It looks like the HC7 will meet my needs, with the mic input and headphone jack.

Jerome posted these two links in another forum HC5 & HC7

Is there an "Englische" button somewhere on Herr Winne's site? It looks great, but it's all Greek...er, German...to me. Smile

I used Babelfish from Altavista, it did a great job overall.

Goto his front page: http://www.fxsupport.de/ and choose ENGLISH toward the bottom in big red letters. Tongue
