Anyone exporting to h264/avc in Nero Vision 5? Aspect ratio problems.... Can't Post

I captured some 16:9 HDV home video using Nero Vision 5.

Edited in Nero Vision 5.

Used Nero Vision 5 to burn a SD-DVD, and the aspect ration appears to be correct. (Letterboxed on my 4:3 TV.)

However, when exporting to Nero Digital AVC (h264/mpg4), using one of the templates, it places black bars on top of the video. So when you play it back, on anything, the video is squished, because of the black bars embedded onto the already 16:9 video. Mad

The Nero Digital AVC templates also seem to default to 4:3, and when I try to change it to 16:9, it doesn't seem to apply/save that change, if that has anthing to do with it. No matter what I change, it still outputs letterboxed 4:3.

I use the native capturing template, which is locked in to capture HDV at 16:9. But, I wonder if it is capturing the HDV footage as 4:3 with letterboxing?

Unfortunately, I'm using Vegas 5 which doesn't seem to handle HDV very well, so I'm stuck with Nero Vision for HDV.

Anyways, any ideas are appreciated...it's just some home video.

If you think Nero is screwing up the import can you just capture the HDV file in Vegas and then bring it into Nero for editing? I am importing native HDV files exported from my NLE and using the h264 conversion for my blurays and it works fine. I don't capture anything in Nero though...just import from other apps. Maybe give that a shot.

Yeah, what I'd REALLY like to do is capture/edit in Vegas, then convert to h264 in Nero, which is how I currently do my wedding videos which are downconverted to DV during capture.

Vegas 5 just apparently won't handle HDV whatsoever.

Hmmm...wait a second...something is strange. I've edited an HDV test clip before in Vegas, but I think I captured using the ConnectHD trial. I'll download that again and give it a try. Maybe Nero captures are wierd and Vegas crashes when I try to import them.

Thanks!

Vegas 5 may not edit HDV well but maybe it will at least capture.

Try this little HDV capture utility. It is freeware. Most HDV captures just capture one long file. It will capture your HDV footage and split it into smaller files with scene detection based on the date and time. If you use native HDV footage it is a handy little utility that works well and is priced right.....free! Even you can afford that. Give that a whirl and see if it helps.

I don't think I can capture in Vegas 5....it won't even recognize the camera, when the camera is set to 1080i. I've got Vegas 5d build 194, which should be the "latest".

I downloaded NeoHDV, and used it to capture to the cineform AVI format, which worked fine, but Vegas crashes when I try to add it to the project. This didn't happen before that I can remember when I had an FX1, but it's been a couple of years since I worked with HDV. Must be my home-made computer. Laugh

I'll try capturing actual HDV, instead of converting to the cineform AVI, and see how that goes.

Thanks!

Well, now I'm eating my words!

The cineform AVI file is what was crashing my system, including Vegas5d.

It took me a while, but I was finally able to delete the cineform AVI in some roundabout way. It would crash even the windows explorer just from being in the folder, and definitely crashed Vegas even when just trying to delete it in the medial pool.

Once I got the cineform AVI off the hard drive, I was able to drop the .m2t file right onto the timeline!

Now I guess I can edit my home video in Vegas, render it back to a HD file, then take that into Nero Recode instead of Nero Vision, and hopefully render it to Nero Digital AVC/h264, and maybe this time it won't put those darned black bars on my video and smush it down. Mad

Glad you figured it all out. Of course I told you about a neat little utility and forgot to link to it. If you do a google search for HDV Split you will find it incase you are still interested in it.

Even you can afford the free prices.
