Anyone using Nework Storage? Can't Post

I remember JeffN was looking into Network Storage. Would one of the gigabit network storage solutions work well with DV and HDV? I mean capture and editing.

SOme folks have been able to edit a couple of streams of DV over a Gigabit network but not HD. I work with a Company that specializes in this and it is nopt cheap to do this at the moment.

Now if somebody else has heard of a cheap way I am all ears!! :)

Mike, maybe you can clear this up for me. Isn't a gigabit connection faster than firewire and usb2? If that is true, then why can't you edit from an external HD connected to a gigabit network card? My issue is my MacBook Pro only has 1 firewire port. I honestly did not realize that when I bought it. Anyway I can not capture to a fw drive if the camera is on the one fw port. I guess I can get a Express 34 card when they are available and add fw800 or esata as others have suggested. What would you do? TIA.

They don't have a PCMIA slot. It has the new Express card slot. Not much available right now. That will change, but what about my question as to which is faster?

In Raw numbers it would seem to beable to do much better than the others but in reality it doesn't. There are many factors to look at such as the switch, cards and computers. By the numbers it looks as if you can get around a 120 MBps out of it but in real life it is not that fast.

Firewire 800, by the numbers should beable to do around 100 MBps and it seems to have a higher transfer rate in most real applications than the Gigabit Network.

It has a lot to do with how wide the pipe is and includes alot of variables. The result is this... It is not easy to transfer, sustain and decode HDV for editing over a normal network.

One of the Stations I trained had the ability to capture native HD to a network from a couple pf machines and the ability to edit off of about 8. The pipelines created for that nework were HUGE! and even then it can slow down.

I know I am rambling right now even though on paper it looks like it should fly, networks are just not the easiest to work over.
