I know this seems like a stupid question, as to why you would want to, but can you?

Yes.
Simply set your recording mode to DV and then pick either 4:3 or 16:9 in the menu.

oh thanks Michael, that's good to know! I may have to shoot some weddings in 4:3 before I can afford to purchase 3 HD cams. So if I use my FX1 and shoot in SD in 4:3 then I can capture my tapes on my DSR-11 then, right?

Correct.
As long as you don't shoot in HDV, then you can still use your DV (4:3 or 16:9) deck for capture.

Cool! I guess there is no reason not to make my initial purchase then. Thanks Michael

Re: [MLiebergot] Can you shoot 4:3 on a Sony FX1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Michael

I was recently looking at a feature comparison of the Sony FX-1 and the Z1U and got a little concerned.

I'm not sure I understand this comparison chart. Under the General column, the 4th item down under the heading "General" it states "4:3 operation in SD" Under the the FX-1 column it says NO, and under the Z1U column it says YES. However according to the FX-1 Manual, (and from what you had told me previously) you can record 4:3 in the DV by selecting to record in the DV format ( FX1 manual p. 20 & 59) then go into the Camera Set menu under the last item in the menu and turn DV Wide Rec to off. (p.55 & 40)

So this is a relief, I was concerned that I couldn't use the FX1 in the 4:3 SD mode along with my VX2xx cams. How would you interpret this statement in the comparison chart?

What's the difference between the wording "SD" or "DV"

I'm starting to wonder just what other statements in this comparison chart are or are not accurate?
