If you're on a PC you either need to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 in order to capture HDV footage, or there are some steps you can take to get that to work without SP2. (I don't have those instructions handy at the moment, but if you'll send me a PM I'll get them to you.) In the meantime, you can set a Sony HDV camera to output widescreen DV footage via firewire, then capture that in any DV editing software set for widescreen editing. That's how I did my first project with the Sony FX1, and the SD output looked very nice. Now I'm experimenting with capturing and editing HDV footage using the Canopus Edius software, which works pretty well with native M2T files. Output to Windows Media at either 1080p or 720p looks good, especially with a little extra sharpening applied to the source footage. If you have Premiere Pro on a PC get the Cineform Aspect HD plugin. If you have access to a Mac, get FCP5. Other solutions are available, but those seem to be the two most talked about at the moment.
