Does GearShift work across projects? Can't Post

Hi all,

Does GearShift work across projects?

What I mean is, can I do this.

1. Create Play.veg
2. .m2t on timeline
3. Gearshift to DV
4. I see something that "belongs" in a deleted scenes.veg
5. copy and paste clip into deleted scenes.veg
6. Can I when done gearshift from inside deleted scenes.veg to and .m2t version?

Didn't realize that Gearshift has a 30 day trial. Very nice.

So yeah, the software is designed to always look for proxies and m2t's in the same directory, so it works across projects!

Now if only I could specify where the proxies get written to. That would be icing on cake.

I'll have to check Gearshift but I thoght there was an option on the bottom right for directory location.

We tried to keep GearShift simple. It looks for the proxies in the same directory as the source media so that it would not be tied to any one project. If we allow you to place proxies in another directory separate from the source media, then we need to keep track of which source files go with which proxy files and that will require GearShift to maintain its own project information. We felt it was too easy for this to get out of sync with the Vegas project and decided to keep it very simple. If enough people want this ability we can certainly figure out a way to add it in a future release.

Johnny,

After I saw how Gearshift worked, the reason for your design made sense...especially if you have projects that have files included from more than one place.

Neverthelss, Gearshift has allowed me to create a workflow that I think will do the trick.

1. capture on my older desktop to an external firewire drive.

2. Connect firewire drive to newer faster laptop.

3. Create veg file on external drive and shift gears...wait

4. Copy to laptop veg file and proxies ONLY.

5. work on laptop using proxies without being tethered to drives.

6. When done editing, connect external drive, copy veg from laptop to external

7. open up veg file on external.

8. shift gears and render

That’s a great workflow and one I recently recommended for someone who wanted to work on an HD project remotely. Instead of moving all the HD media out to where the editor was, they rendered DV proxies with GearShift, sent the proxies to the editor, and the when the editor returned the veg file, they shifted gears to get all the HD media back into the project. I’m glad GearShift is working out for you. Thanks,

Johnny Roy,

I just got an HC1 and am trying to figure out the right workflow. If I use gearshift, do I not have to use cineform?

Thanks,
Dave

No you do not have to use Cineform with GearShift. In fact, that’s one of the primary reason’s we developed GearShift. It lets you work with a DV Proxy and then swap back to the original M2T file without needing to re-render to Cineform. Just set your HD Media setting to (None) and only the DV Proxy will be created (i.e., no Cineform or YUV files will be created) The choice is yours.

My workflow for infinitiCAM and GearShift is:

Step 1: Use GearShift with the Source Files option to convert all the source files you will use to DV Proxies (set HD Media to none). Make sure you have the Add/Replace in Media Pool options checked. This will leave all the DV Proxies in the media pool when rendering is complete.

Step 2: Use infinitiCAM to set up your camera tracks and add the proxies from the Media Pool to the tracks for each camera. Use infinitiCAM as you normally would for camera switching and finally build your master track.

Step 3: When you are ready to render, use GearShift to Shift Gears and this will replace all the DV Proxies with the M2T files and your master track will be ready for rendering.
