Editing HDV on a Powerbook Can't Post

Hi

I’m shooting HDV material on Maui – and need to do some editing on location. I own a Powerbook G4 15” / 1.25ghz / 1Gb RAM / ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 - and a LaCie 500GB drive.

My questions are – running FCP5 on this system - can I even edit (basic cuts) and view HDV footage?

Which is the largest (2nd) monitor I can use with this system? Obviously 1900 X 1200 is the preferred way to go (and am happy to buy a Sony or Mac monitor to get the job done) – but no one I have spoken to has tested a system in this configuration.

Which is the best brand for the job? I’m a die hard Sony fan who has used Macs since 1984 – so I’ll suffer no pain buying either product. I just want the one which will look the best viewing video content.

Or is there a monitor out there that uses a 1394 i/o – and if it was out there – can you hook up via Firewire and have a look that way?

Or do I need to downconvert from my Z1 and look at this stuff in DV – then head to LA and my G5 dp’s???

Questions questions!!!

Can't you set your second monitor out on the Powerbook to input DVI to a monitor?

Re: [DSE] Editing HDV on a Powerbook [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi - thanks for your question. I'm not sure if I fully understand it. The DVI port on my Powerbook is available for connecting an outboard monitor.

I have not yet purchased a monitor. The goal is to view the HDV footage once it is digitized into the Powerbook running FCP5. II want to make the best choice of monitor purchase - and to see if its feasible to even do the job i.e. viewing the footage in HD. Can a Powerbook play HDV onto a 23" DVI monitor set at 1920 X 1200?

Thanks for your help.

It should be able to, yes. (Assuming it's a newer powerbook.

I own a Powerbook G4 15” / 1.25ghz / 1Gb RAM / ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 - and a LaCie 500GB drive. It is less than two years old.

So then the big decision becomes whether to get a Sony SDM-P234/B or an Apple 23-inch Cinema HD Display, or...?

Any feedback from users who have experienced the two monitors? Believe it or not, our local Maui Pro Video Superstore is fresh out of displays for me to see!!! Remember - this is primarily for HDV monitoring, not setting up budgets on Excel.

Papa Hui has some great displays at VideoLife on Oahu, I'm there now...just visited his store yesterday. You're not here for the Film Fest?

RE: You're not here for the Film Fest?

No, I'm not here for the film festival. I live on Maui - and my company's office and facility is in San Pedro, CA.

I'll be in LA next month, but I really want to buy this monitor now. I'm shooting all sorts of material on a daily basis - and want to get the footage digitized and viewed. So about that Sony vs. Apple monitor question :-) Anyone want to go out on a limb and say which one looks better displaying HDV? Remember, this is for the Maui off-line suite. In LA, the approach is to go the Decklink - Sony BVM route

I've limited experience with the Apple...the displays in the two are identical, I like the Sony 234, but then again, I've got a LOT of experience with it. I won't go out on a limb and say one is better than the other.

The Sony's DO look interesting to me. I think I may have to snag one and give it a try. For my LA facility, I plan to use the Sony's due to their 15 pin inputs for PC's. That way, I can switch between the G5 system and an existing Lightworks VIP-4500 which, along with an Abekas 8150, still graces the console! Until FCP5's multi cam edit abilities, the VIP took care of multi cam business. Now, it is not needed for that! Now if only Lightworks would make their bullet proof, super tough feeling control surface work with FCP. Now talk about a void in the marketplace!!! But that's for a different thread :-) Enjoy Oahu Spot!

We have a local Pro Video Superstore on Maui?!?! Where? I've never seen one.

I run FCP Studio on my 17" Powerbook and for previewing I've been sending it out via firewire back to my Z1 and using component out from the camera into a Sony NTSC monitor. I'm also looking at getting either a 23 in. cinema display or a dell widescreen monitor to use asa second monitor for HD previewing. I've read that the Sony has a little better contrast ratio than the Apple display. I've also heard that the display on some apple lcds exhibit a pinkish hue. You can check out the cinema displays in person at MacNet near Marco's restaurant in Kahului.
