F1X1 Cineframe 30 and 24 Can't Post

I'm new to this whole HD thing. Just picked up an FX1 yesterday. I have a question regarding the cineframe mode. I've been shooting weddings with a VX2100 at 60 and then using Vegas to do a 24p 2-3 pulldown to achieve the "non-video" look. My clients have been pretty happy with that. Now that I'm doing HD, I don't think I have that option, correct? If I wanted something 24p filmlike, I'd have to do it in-camera. Or is there a way of making a conversion and still have it HD? Am I losing quality by using the Cineframe on the FX1? Thanks!

I don't use the cineframe option (PAL version) but I know some people do like it. I think the latest versions of cineform's plug-in alter different output rates. You need to have a word with Douglas Spotted Eagle, DSE, the expert on hdv and vegas.

If you're making a 24p SD DVD, then you should be able to do it the same way you did before. Just use the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen Video Stream Template when rendering out to .mpg for the DVD. I've done this with HDV converted with ConnectHD footage in Vegas 4. 60i to 24p isn't perfect, and you definitely have to be mindful of how you shoot, but at least it removed the home video look.

Good luck!

Jason, BTW, I have been hearinf great things on the latest version of Cineforms Connect HD program.
Very good conversion while capturing to 24Progressive right from your camera.

Digexpression,
Be cautious using CF24 for 24p. With the CineForm tool, it's a usable option, but outside of using that, Vegas does a *reasonable* job of creating pulldown where there really isn't any due to the packaging of the stream. I'd submit you get a slightly better look shooting 60i and using a 24p timeline in Vegas instead, but if you have CineForm, it manages the pulldown very nicely, with a proprietary algorithm.

I'm using the Z1 shooting in Cineframe 25P, and slowing the resulting footage down to 23.98 fps to create 24P DVDs for NTSC playback. I've tried various methods to create convincing film-motion, including shooting 50i and de-interlacing in post, but it's proving way too time consuming.

Sony's cineframe mode is actually quite good for what it does, and although I lose the temporal resolution of 50 half-frames (thereby making slo-mo tougher), I think it's worth it for the overall production workflow.

Re: [DSE] F1X1 Cineframe 30 and 24 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey guys. I am glad this question came up. I edit on Premiere Pro 2.0 and I will begin editing our weddings we have shot in HDV this season soon. I do have Cineform Aspect HD. Everything has been shot 60i.

What is the best way for me do get the 24P/Filmic Look and still get good slow mo? Should I capture HDV via Cineform and use the Pulldown to 24p? Is it possible to only process realtime clips/segments of the timeline to 24p while keeping my native 60i for slow motion? Other suggestions. Thanks much in advance.

If you're working in Premiere, I'd recommend capturing via CineForm, and using their 24p conversion in that tool. Most NLE's don't do 24p from 50i/60i very well, and CineForm has a very nice flow.

I'd like to also add that my DP shot in CF24 and we watched the camera and actress motion, for a short film I did. No real visual problems. Know the camera's strengths and weaknesses, and great video can be produced.
