FX1000 and HVR-MRC1K limitations ?

Hidee-Ho All,
Bought the FX1000 (and HVR-MRC1K) to work along with my 2 Z7's. It arrived on Thursday and I used it that Saturday with tape. Awesome footage at an outdoor wedding! The HVR-MRC1K was backordered.
Got the HVR-MRC1K in the mail yesterday. Hooked the cam and recording unit up and was able to record to the card, only by way of pushing the two REC buttons. I have not been able to set the camera and recording unit to work together, when pressing the record button on the camera.
I had expected the HVR-MRC1K to be the same start/stop operation as the Z7's. Hit the camera rec button on the camera to start recording to tape and card with the cam button.
The manuals are as clear as mud and I'm having no luck with google.
Just wondering if it is even possible with the fx1000 via the firewire cable.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
The recording unit is set to "synchrounous"
