Godfrey: I haven't yet created DVDs from HDV downconverted to DV yet, but I have created widescreen DVDs from 16:9 SD DV footage from the FX1. I found that my usual encoder, the Canopus hardware encoder, which was great with 4:3 SD footage, did a terrible job with 16:9 footage, making the footage look very soft and even slightly distorted; so I switched to the Procoder Express (only $60 or so) and it did a great job. So it seems to me from this experience that some encoders do a better job with 16:9 than others. Don't know why, I suspect it has something to do with field order. Also, note that SD material on an LCD screen generally doesn't look as good as the same material on CRT's. I don't think there's much that can be done about that.
