If you're just shooting DV, then I think you could use any cheap camcorder as a deck. But for HDV, my understanding is that you've pretty much got to have a Sony HDV camera or HDV deck to playback or capture the footage in HDV. I've been using my HC1 as both a deck and a backup camera at weddings. I bought it on clearance for $1250.00, which is significantly cheaper than any of Sony's HDV decks.
