FX1 freezes Can't Post

Anyone had an FX1 freezefor about 1 second during record then move on? This seems to happen intermittently when the camera is still and happens at random times during shooting.

I get them all the time with HDV...dropouts. DV dropouts just give you a frame of sparklies...HDV dropouts ruin the entire shot.

Also, make sure you don't have "QuickRecord" enabled...that's a great way to ruin an entire video!

Thanks Rusty

Have read that the HDV drop outs can be related to type of tape used ( wet or dry lubricant). That ring any bells with you with the FX1 and if so what tapes you find most reliable?

I don't know, but about the only tapes I've ever used are the cheaper Sony Premium tapes. However, dropouts seemed more common when I tried using 83 minute tapes, so I went back to the 60 minute tapes.

One of the benefits of actually editing a wedding immediately after I shoot them these days...I can see whether I'm having any troubles like this and maybe need to clean the heads or not...versus finding that you have 12 weddings sitting on the shelf waiting to be edited...and finding out they're all plagued with dropouts from a dirty head. Crazy

Good luck!

Haven't had too many drop outs on our Z1s using Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ tapes, knock on wood. We did however have a wierd thing happen while editing the other day. Laura was working on a wedding we did together and was yelling at me (what else is new) that I was cutting the camera in the middle of the ceremony. The clip would cut and come back on in about a half second. At first I thought "What the hell did I do" Then we realized it was the cam or tape that did it. Haven't seen it do it again. That ever happen to anybody?

Steve, sorry to inform you that what you experienced was an HDV tape dropout. Crazy
Dropouts in HDV appear as 1-2 seconds of black no picture or audio.
As opposed to macro blocking like you would get with DV footage on tape.

Michael

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

Yea, but ours was just a straight cut from movement to movement. One was during the reccesional, just a straight cut of about 15-30 frames. We have had it where it freezes for a split second, but this was different. Hope it is a form of a dropout and not the camera. Unsure

Yes I have seen that and I've come to the conclusion that it was caused by the Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes I had been using with my older VX2K cameras. Now that I have switched over to new Sony Z1 and FX1 cams, I'm only going to use Sony HDM-63VG tapes. Have only recorded 2 weddings thus far with the new cams and haven't captured any footage to the computer yet, but from the stuff I spot checked, it looked really good.

I don't understand that word "Sex"? Isn't that a number after 5?

Take a tape and fast forward it to the end of the tape and try and put it in each camera and see if you get some kind of error message.

Sony cameras have an issue with a capstan or something getting in a weird position and not winding tape properly and giving an error message.

the only solution, if you get the error message is to stick a tape in and slap the camera on your knee to jar the capstan back in place. I know it sounds nuts but I did it with 3 cameras last year and twice this year and it works. Here is a forum that has all kinds of people doing it and fixing their cameras:

http://www.camerahacker.com/...8_-_Error_Code..html

I swear this works if you are getting an error code. I wouldn't give you bad advice about something like this.

That's illegal in 49 states, and your nowhere close to living in California.

And right on schedule, after noticing an increased amount of dropouts...I KNEW I'd ironically get the dirty head warning after posting this...and sure enough this past Saturday I got the warning on my FX7. I hadn't cleaned the heads since I bought it, so it was about time I guess. Fortunately it was during the reception and towards the end of a tape anyways, and I had my head cleaning tape with me...knowing it was coming.

Hey Goodfrey,

I used to get this a fair bit on my z1 but I did have it in quick record... a definate NO NO.. see post at top of forum. However, that has already been mentioned. Another thing that was noticed was the tape tension in our camera was significantly higher to other cameras so the tech guy made it looser. Since taking the camera out of quick record and the tape tension made loser we have not experience it since (touch wood!). We use Sony DVM 60pro tapes.

Great....it's a gamble I make every wedding, shooting with one camera: getting the droput during the vows...

Finally happened last weekend. It was about the 3rd dropout on the tape so far during the ceremony:
