FX1 users and low light performance..? Can't Post

Hi,

How are all of you guys (and gals) dealing with the obvious drop off in low light performance from the PD & VX cams to the FX1? Do you have to light everything? Or are you just gaining up? How much are you having to add in receptions that are low light, or weddings for that matter..? I made the mistake of doing a side by side with my PD170. difference was almost 15db of gain on the FX1 to 0db on the PD...

Cheers,
Scott

Scott,
With your test, how did the picture at 15db gain look in comparison with the PD?

It looked good but I am haven't gotten to the point of down converting it and burning to DVD to do an apple to apple comparison...

Hoping to get there this weekend...but , got a wedding to finish editing...

Cheers,
Scott

The gain is the key button on the Z1 and FX1 in lowlight. You can't really successfully use the gain on the VX2100 or the PD, but you can on the FX1. That is why you can't really compare the 2 cameras at the gain setting. The gain setting is really a mute point, the picture you can get in low light is the only important thing.

I'm still new at this but that's a hard thing to get used to....especially after using the PD. The PD just seems to manufacture light. It could be pitch black and you would still get something with the PD170.

Well, that is true, you would get something. The thing is, given the exact same scenario, you could bump the gain on the FX1 or the Z1 and actually get usable footage with no noise and deep colors. That is something you would not get on the PD, apples and apples comparison.

Thanks for telling me, I always thought it was mute... moot... I will remember that. (is moot a real word?)
