HD/QT7 display question Can't Post

I am trying to sell a friend of mine on a project...

He is a big time home builder here in our area. (www.knickerbockergroup.com), multimillion dollar homes. He is just finishing a new display building/space and wants to have a big Plasma/HDTV screen to display their work.

I am interested in getting one of the new Sony HDV cameras and one use would be to go and film his completed projects. Pump them into FCP 5, edit in HD then display the work on the big TV in HD.

Since there is not a HD DVD possibility yet, I assume that the footage I shoot and edit will have to be shown on the TV via a computer. This computer would have to have DVI output to go directly to the TV?? Will this set up allow 1080i video to be shown smoothly via QT7 on a large screen TV?

Thanks,
Eric

In what you are trying to do, there are settop appliciances that will play high def windows media files. i have an AveLinkplayer. It works great but there are a few bugs, but for the most part, a very good system for a little over $200. There are others on the market, do a little research, but it can be done successfully. Just edit your hdv project and encode to HD WMV. Burn that file to a DVD and there you go. You can even create dvd menus from html code, but that is a different story. Sounds like you just want an HD continuous playback, HD WMV seems to be your answer.

Re: [szerangue] HD/QT7 display question [In reply to] Can't Post

Shane,
Thanks for the info. One issue is I am working on a mac, how do I export WMV files?
Another would be the idea that this footage might need to be called up on demand, like "We will no show you the Jackson house we just finished", how would this set top player work in that scenario? Is it a menu system like a DVD?
Thanks for the help,
Eric

You would be better to post this question on the VU Wedding forum, there are many users there who use MACS. I am a PC user, therefore cannot help you at all when it comes to macs and exporting.
As far as the settop player, it will show your dvd as it would if you inserted the dvd into your computer. You would see the files in the folder and then you could just click on the one you want to play. Nothing fancy. As I said, you can create DVD menus using HTML, but I do not know nor have I tried to do this yet.

Eric: there's software you can buy now for exporting WMV files on a Mac, but the name escapes me at the moment. The other thing you could do is record and edit in HDV and output as a widescreen SD DVD, which should look better on a widescreen plasma monitor than footage from 4.3 format SD cameras. But to really get the full effect of HD/HDV you need HD output, which either means using something like the Avel Linkplayer2 or a computer with a video card that has HD component outputs. This last option would give you the best results with prettier onscreen menus than the Linkplayer, but setting it up could be expensive and time-consuming. You'll have to decide how much time you want to put into this and whether it's worth that effort to get the output in HD form, or if widescreen SD is suffiicent for now.
