HDR-FX1E Picture Profile COLOR PHASE Can't Post

How does this item really work?

I have used my FX1 for some time now, but never got that adjustment to work - until to day (I think?). According to the Operating Instructions, this item helps adjusting the color into greenish (-7) or reddish (+7).

I have always used the manual white balance adjustment, but the COLOR PHASE didn't work. I was not able to notice any difference in color.

To day, however, I had to use the automatic white balance, AWB. Then I again would try the COLOR PHASE adjustment, and.....it worked!!

But, is it meant to work like that, only i AWB?

Any experiences out there?

This is correct, if you're shooting AWB, you want/need the adjustment for color shift in case you don't have a good target. I was surprised to see this on the FX, as I thought it was originally slated only for the Z1.

Re: [DSE] HDR-FX1E Picture Profile COLOR PHASE [In reply to] Can't Post

I was curious about this COLOR PHASE-adjustment, and did some more research. Yesterday I found that this adjustment also worked with preset outdoor, preset indoor and in the manual positions A and B.

For some reason I earlier aimed my FX1 at a white sheet of paper, and couldn’t notice any greenish/reddish change in color when adjusting the CP. Then I remembered an advice from earlier: “When making a check-up if your whitebalance is correct set, aim your camera at a grey surface afterwards. In a correct set monitor it will be easier to judge the result”. When aiming my camera at greyish colored surface (in this case anything but white will also do) it was very easy to notice that the color was changed from greenish (-7) into reddish (+7).

But, I also noticed that the changes made in the COLOR PHASE-adjustment were not as “strong” as if you go to the bluish to reddish WB-control in the Picture Profile-menu.

I hope my “norwegian-english” is good enough for you to understand.

By the way, I also have the list 44 Professional Advantages of the HVR-Z1U over the HDR-FX1 in front of me, and I am now not so convinced of if the number 44 is correct anymore. But, that is another story.

I apologize for taking it off topic, but could you elaborate on the above statement? I need a new camera(s) but my business budget just got slammed, and could get worse. I pretty much just do weddings now, don't need XLR or shotgun mics, and the FX1 would save me a substatial amount of $$$ over a Z1. The Z1 claims better low-light performance, but Sony's site says "1 LUX with HyperGain"; which I'm not sure using Hypergain and possibly adding grain to a clean picture would be worth the upgrade alone. I'm not sure that a lot of the added features would be usefull enough for use at run-n-gun weddings/receptions, but I've got time to compare now. Wink
