"HDTV - Merciless Lens Panics Boomers" Can't Post

Interesting article on TV News peoples concerns and reactions regarding HD. "The verdict is that television news is not ready for its close-up."

http://www.observer.com/20060227/20060227_Rebecca_Dana_pageone_nytv.asp

“A high-definition camera can see more than the naked eye sees,” said Doug McAward, a veteran television producer. “You can’t just slap on foundation with a sponge any more,” he said. “The camera sees imperfections. It magnifies them.”

I've encountered this already with at least one customer and don't understand the paranoia: everyone expects still cameras to have many-megapixel resolution, but people are terrified of having video get beyond the resolution of $25 toy cameras. Weird.

Most TV productions aren't taped with that much clarity...they can get away with more basic make-up and so forth. However, there could be some filters that smooth out the details, so you have "smoother" hi-res HDV images...which is kind of taking a step backwards, but the movies do it. Ever seen Robert Redford in a normal, non-filtered interview? :o

Bob Costas looks perennially youthful in his weekly appearance on Inside the NFL on HBO. But suddenly, in Torino, he looks like he's 60!

HD is great for lions in the Serengeti but really rough on talking heads.

Cheers!
