HDV and Weddings Can't Post

I'm new to HD and to this forum in general. If I'm going to buy a HDV camera (which I will sometime), can i shoot weddings with it and put the footage on DVD and video? What confuses me is when people say that you can't put HDV on a DVD? You have to compress it or something? Please clear this up for me.. thanks...

DVD players can't play the HDV format. What you do is shoot in HDV, then down-convert it to SD resolution before making your DVD.

Workflow:
1. Shoot HDV (Mpeg2)
2. Edit HDV or intermediary (advisable to use intermediary depending on your NLE)
3. Render to MPEG 2 in standard def OR render to WMV-HD, or to H.264. THe latter two options are for computer playback at this time only.
4. Burn to DVD.
5. Collect check from client and go to dinner on the profits. Wink

The answer to your question is entirely time-dependent. You can buy a cam now, learn to shoot widescreen and understand lighting, composing the frame, movement, etc, and deliver SD for DVD player or deliver HD for computer only...or buy the cam later and depending on your client, you can deliver HD in AVC for DVD player playback, or in around a year, deliver for Blu-Ray delivery. HD saturation for consumers is at least 2 years away, but cheap HD players will be available shortly after Xmas that will play AVC/.264

At the risk of being a salesperson, you might check out my book "HDV: What You NEED to Know." you can get it on Amazon for around 18.00 or so. It also comes free with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum.

And also see the HDV Guide in the Free Library. Plus, DSE has an informative little book out, "HDV: What you NEED to Know".
