HDV workflow Can't Post

Hi all you HDV people out there. How do you set uop your workflows?
Do you
A- Shoot HDV, the capture and edit HDV and then downconvert to SD for DVDs
or
B- Shoot HDV, capture SD and go from there.
Oh and I am using FCP Studio
Thanks

Mike, I take it you are not going to WEVA? There are going to be svereal seminars on this including the one I am going to today .."Afternoon with Apple" which will discuss this from start to finish.

Basically what I do is capture native HDV using one of FCP's capture presets. It responds very well in FCP 5. I haven't delivered any projects yet other than directly to the web. (Wait till you see how QT 7 handles HDV content!) But what I will do is downconvert it from there and burn SD DVDS. However, before I do that, I am going to burn at least one HD DVD.

Thanks Daniel:
You are right, unfortunately we can't make it to WEVA this year.
This is the way I ahve been thinking about working. Capture HDV, Edit HDV and then downconvert from there. Do you find this to give you better end results than if you downconvert before editing.
Thanks

Generally you'll get better results editing in HDV and rendering from HDV to DVD because of colorspace, where DVD has twice as much color info as DV, and if you convert in camera to DV then edit and delive to DVD you're loosing that, but it isn't that much of a difference I think.

"A" once your done with the edit, you do not have to go back and do an HDV version later.

Mike, just got out of the Afternoon with Apple"...whew..what a load of info! Wow. There is so much more to the FCP Studio than I ever imagined. I don't have time to post everything but one thing that REALLy stood out is ...well...2 things...first..I had NO idea that with HDV, you can export right from the FCP timeline as a QT movie and import directly into DVDSP and because it is already in mpeg 2 format, requires no additional encoding!

Secondly, and this is huge...within DVDSP you can ceate a DVD with 2 sets of TS folders, one for SD content that they client can play now, and one with HD content that can be played later! This is exciting to say the least.

The guys from Ripple Training who were giving the seminar were uite sure that by QT 4 of this year, we will start seeing the first HD players.

Mike,
If you're in the Toronto area, Sony/VASST will be there during the Toronto Film Festival next month with the "HDV SOLUTIONS TOUR" at two locations, one at the Film Festival itself, and the other at the Toronto Film College.
Sept 15, 16, 17.

Hey Douglas:
Thanks for the info. We are about 2 1/2 hours away from Toronto and we don't have a wedding that weekend. I think we can make the drive. I will see if any of our local association might want to go.
Thanks again

HDV workflow, FX1 observations [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm doing something halfway in between. I capture HDV into Vegas 6b, do a basic color/brightness adjustment and then convert to 720x480 anamorphic widescreen using the 4:2:2 HuffYUV codec in "Convert to YUY2" mode. All my editing is then done on this SD file. So I don't have the time and/or disk space overhead of editing HDV raw or intermediate files, but I see better color detail on the final DVD than I can get with DV at 4:1:1. HDV is an interesting format but I have yet to have a single customer show any interest in delivery of HD.

I originally worried that the FX1 would be inferior to my trusty VX2k in low light, but in my head-to-head tests down to 11 lux (1 foot-candle) the FX1 holds its own. Example still frames available at
