HD capture options Can't Post

Using a PC and Vegas 6.0 to do my editing. Can somebody tell me what my options are for capturing HD? I've heard of Connect HD. Any others that will get the job done? Why doesn't Vegas' capture utility allow you to capture the HD footage? The program is said to support HD format. Thanks.

Vegas WILL capture HDV without any additional software. When setting up the capture, select "external capture application". You can only capture native HDV .m2t files, which (even though Vegas can handle them) are NOT easy to edit with.

You can also try Cineform's ConnectHD, which has a 30 day free trial. This little application has three options: Capture .m2t, convert on the fly and capture an intermediate version .avi, or do both. (Or you can capture as .m2t and convert afterwards, a process which adds another lengthy step to the capture process). I have not managed to get the "combined" option to work consistently; my computer, although pretty much state of the art, bogs down and stops the capture after a couple of minutes. The other drawback I've found with ConnectHD is that there is no video display window, so you can't "see" what's going on during the capture.

Thanks! So my next question is, how do you render to m2t?

There is an option within Vegas to do this. The m2t file is essentially a MPEG2 file.

Select the HDV 1080 60i/50i option under the MPEG2 render

Cineform (www.cineform.com) has great intermediate codecs (HD) for editing m2t files. Vegas likes a D.I. better than native m2t. You can also try VASST's Gearshift: http://vasst.com/product.aspx?id=5830e4f9-d99b-4d0b-908d-aa4954c324a3 It's also a proxy editor, so if you have a slower computer, you can use it to convert the HD m2t files into DV and back again.

Also, using a DI can increase the size of the file from 12-13 gb per hour for 1080i HDV (native m2t) to around 40-50 gb per hour at a high quality.
