Originally I though this would be stupid question but now I'm not so sure. I know that, to save wear on heads many people use a VTR for capture. I presume a "normal" vtr can't play back HD for capture purposes which means you would have to play back through the cam?

Yes, you are correct. Sony makes a high def VTR, forget the model but it costs about 4k.

Shane,

Thanx for that. I've just gone to the end of this forum and omeone asked the same question a couple of months ago. D'oh!

Great thread everybody. I haven't done much HDV stuff with my Z1 outside of experimentation. I usually capture SD from the component out straight to my Newtek VT4 system with a SD VTR as backup. Until Newtek comes up with a HDV capture solution I'm stuck with SD as we live switch multicam most events. How cool is that gonna be when I can live switch HDV!!! I'm not holding my breath right now though. Newtek has not made HDV a priority right now, at least they haven't said anything yet.

HDV can be confusing, especially with new codecs being introduced with the HVX200 - I'm hearing different things left and right.
But one of the main reasons HDV is troublesome to edit natively and cannot be scrubbed through as quickly is that the codec basically records a frame here and there, then makes an intraframe between each of those keyframes, by basically interpolating the in betweens. So whenever you make a cut, you're cutting off keyframes and the computer has re-interpret the keyframe/intraframe sequence of the clip - if you cut off a keyframe, the computer has to assign a new one, then make new intraframes. Which is what confuses the timecode, or so I've heard, so you can't edit in SD then re-import in HDV. With new codecs on the new HD cameras, you may be able to do that, though they'll take up more memory.

Btw, how's everyone like the HDV codec - I've heard people hate it, because the intraframing can really distort quick movement and out of focus shots pretty much screw up codecs intraframing. I haven't seen a ton of footage, but from what I hear, HDV is not sounding tempting.

Re: [flyerland] High def weddings. [In reply to] Can't Post

When I play HDV footage on my HDTV it looks great, but I suppose it all depends what you're comparing it to. I wouldn't expect it to look as good as footage from a more expensive HD camera using a less compressed codec, but if you have the budget for one of those then by all means bypass HDV. The Panasonic HVX200 sounds like a promising camera until you consider how much it's going to cost to record more than a few minutes of video, and how much of a hassle it's going to be to archive your master footage. So for now there isn't a more practical way to record high-definition video at a reasonable price than using HDV, and that isn't likely to change any time soon.

If I can edit is SD with the option of re-connecting the media to HD, then it might be worth it, though.

Hi: what kind of HDTV are you using, and what is its resolution?

There's a thread over on WEVA which indicates that HDV doesn't look so great on an HDTV with a resolution of 1280x768 ...

Re: [David L] High def weddings. [In reply to] Can't Post

David: I have a Panasonic 53" rear-projection CRT HDTV with a native resolution (in theory) of 1080i. I've seen plenty of discussions on WEVA and elsewhere by people who say they don't like HDV, but as far as I can tell these folks either (a) have never actually used HDV and are just trying to protect their investment in expensive SD cameras, or (b) are comparing HDV to high-end HD cameras costing roughly twenty times as much as a Sony FX1. This is all nonsense, and HDV works just fine for what it is. It's not perfect and won't make other good cameras useless, but it does offer impressive image quality for the price with a few limitations.

If you shoot AND capture in HDV....then edit in HDV.....you will then do 2 things with the edited HDV footage.
1) you will output to HDV tape, and save it for the bride who is willing to pay(or not pay, however one's contract reads), when she finally has all the HD components in her home so she can view her HD wedding. Which then you will REcapture the HDV tape into your system and encode in whatever format is then available and necessary to be able to deliver to the bride an HD product.
I'm wrapping up my latest HDV wedding now, but my goal will be to archive the production in HDV back onto miniDV tape. Later when Blueray/HDDVD becomes available, I will recapture the tape (singular). I think that's what you asked...if so, then the answer is yes.
2) you will also output to SD tape and/or encode for SD DVD to deliver to the bride now.
Yes, I will deliver SD DVD (widescreen) today.
As of June 2005, is this what most of you, in the HD world are doing?
Yes from me (Dave G)... I can't speak for everyone.

have also delivered a few 2 hour 6mb WMVHD 720P on DVD as 2nd in 2 disc set as SDDVD for one disc and HDDVD on 2nd for playback on the Avellink. Even though it is highly compressed WMV only at 720 (which is what 99% of consumer screens display anyway. The quality compared to SD on anything other than a SD tube tv is incomparable. Mega crisp no aliasing much better range than 8mb mp2. The wites don't blow out near as soon etc etc.

Shane, are you using Encore for DVD? I'm still in the infancy of HDV with only one cam so far, but I do have Premire Pro 1.5 with the HD plug-in. I have a 3.6 gig Sony VAIO, but with only 1ghz of mem, but a terabyte of disc space. Slowly I'm getting there.
