Is all HDV the same flavor? Can't Post

I ask because I am thinking about buying a HV20 to start playing around with HDV in the off season. But if I decide to go with Sony HDV cams, can I still use the Canon HV20 as a capture deck/back-up/balcony cam?

You should be able to shoot, play back, and capture HDV footage from pretty much any manufactured camera and be alright.
As long as you shoot in interlaced 1080i on mini DV tape (this is what makes it HDV and not HD or ADVC).

You will start running into problems if you start shooting in 24P (or progressive in general). Especially if you shoot with cameras from different manufacturers (Sony, Canon). As they record progressive differently.
However if you stay with the same manufacturer (Canon), then you could shoot 24F with a A1 and still capture progressive 24F with your HV20.

I've not yet shot anything in HD yet. I always assumed you had to have HD tapes. Of course I never realized there was a differance in HD and HDV. Are you saying that I can shoot HDV with the same mini dv tapes that I've been using to shoot SD?

Yes.. this is the case. There are, of course, special tapes that are supposed to help with less drop-outs but I don't think many people use them.

HDV is a particular form of HD, of which there are many recording formats. And yes, you can record HDV on standard miniDV tapes no problem - but test your usual brand of tapes first before going out on a paid shoot.

I've been using the HDV tapes with my FX-1's for two years. I tried some regular ones, and got hangs and dropouts, even with new tapes. Could have been a bad batch, but I stick with the HD tapes. Just roll the price into your final cost.

Sony has come out with a new tape, the HDM-63VG. Is for HDV/DV has anyone tried these yet? I just bought 10 of them to try out with my recent FX1 purchase. I have been using Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes on my VX2xxx cams and I think they have been causing problems with the cameras.
